02/26 Luna checking in

Luna wanted to stop by and let everyone know she is doing well. We just had our 3 month follow-up appointment, and as you can see from the pics below, she is back to her old self. We're up to 7.2 lbs now and most of her fur has grown back. It's still cold here, but Luna is looking forward to getting out in the patio and talking to birds.

We had full blood work yesterday, so I filled out the "LABS" tab as much as I could in our spreadsheet. Everything was in normal range except for Fructosamine and Cholesterol. Our doctor said he wasn't worried about the Cholesterol since the ALT was low, but he might want to increase her insulin dose if we can't get her BG down a little.

For the last two months we've been pretty much flat and yellow. We tried 1.5u a few weeks ago and she went from 80 to 450. Our vet doesn't like to see her fluctuate like that so we got her to flatten out again. We're going to try a light 1.5u to see if we can get her down a little bit, even if it's just a high blue at AM and PMPS. Luna is sensitive to even the smallest increase, so we should see something. If not, we'll talk to our vet to see what he wants to do next. We're also still working with the nutritionist, so maybe she'll have some input too.

I know we're not adjusting her insulin as much as some would like, but I think there's something to be said for slow and steady. She seems to improving slowly (only two 400+ in two months), she's not bouncing all over the place, and her blood work for the most part looks good. We need to do some fine tuning, but maybe a less aggressive approach is needed for some cats. That can be a debate for another day, right now, we're just happy Luna is healthy and back to her old, aloof, and slightly annoying self (3AM screaming).

We hope everyone here is doing well. We'll continue to pop-in periodically with updates and to read about everyone else.

Great update for Luna. I'm so happy to hear she is doing well and back to her old self. She looks great in the picture. Thanks for the update.

Glad to hear Luna is well. Ollie also doesn't take change in insulin well lately. 5u is way to much (dropped her to 29 after 3 doses) and 4.75 isn't enough. So we are inbetween right now. So hard to measure it.

Previous kitty and Ollie have high cholesterol, vet said there wasn't anything to do about it. Both had/have hcm so maybe its because of that. IDK.

Keep us posted.

Luna looks awesome—still love those cheeks :bighug:!! Happy to hear all is going well and that you have that amazing team to continue to work with to help create a plan that is more specific to Luna’s individualized needs :p. Luna is making sure to stay well so that you guys can save the money back up to buy those heated floors you told us she wants in the future !!

Great report on Luna! So thrilled that she's gained weight too!

The Purina DM may be keeping the numbers up a bit...so it's kinda hard to tell if the insulin is actually lowering her BG...since it's kinda high in carbs.. But I know Luna has to eat and taking your time to get her back on track - well, that's what you have to do. Sounds like you've got a wonderful vet...hopefully soon, she can graduate to less DM and a little more wet food...that may bring the numbers down in and of itself without too much playing with the insulin dosage.

Congratulations on how well she's doing! Great that you stopped in for a visit :)

Thank you. We're happy she gained weight too. A lot easier to give the injection if you have something to grab onto.

We're actually using the wet version of the DM (I should add that to our signature), but yes, it's still higher in carbs. I think around 10%. They gave us a list of foods to try when we first brought her home and got off the feeding tube, but all but 2 had fish in it. Out of those 2, Luna decided she would only eat the higher carb food. And we were worried about her not eating at that time, so we went with the DM. We have a message out to our nutritionist. I wonder if she'll want to change things up now.
