We were shocked upon testing him tonight to see such a low number. He gave no indication of anything wrong. We usually test at +2 or +3 so we didn't expect anything abnormal. We gave him a whole can of FF gravy and we'll be testing every half an hour until he gets into dark greens at least.

Edit: We tested twice and got the same number.

A whole can of FF may have been a little overkill...as far as keeping him hungry. But, getting that # up is def the key:cat:
The key is to bump them with high carb food in small increments to maintain their appetite. You don't want them getting too full when you really need them to eat because the #s are low again and need another bump. The effect from high carb and med carb food wears off. At any rate...you should be getting some eyes on this post and I'm eagerly awaiting your next test.

ETA : Def. a great catch! WTG Mom!

Not every cat shows signs of being too low until they're having a seizure. China would come to me with a special "urgency" that she was hungry and that always tipped me off but other than that, she never showed any "classic" signs either.

Thank goodness you tested!! Good catch!

Down to 1.75 units tomorrow, even if Apple is really high. He'll probably bounce to the moon but he's still earned a reduction

Typically we like them to go up about 30-40 points from high carb food. Today's experiment tells you a full can might have been a bit much. The high carbs could wear off in a couple hours, so you'll need to keep testing. But you can wait another hour after the last test since he's so high.

PS: could you update your subject line so we know Apple is out of danger now?

A couple times Neko got to the 20's. She lay down in front of the fridge. :p Other than that, no signs, which hopefully meant she wasn't there long.

Yeah I thought about that after, but he actually didn't eat it all he likes to lick the gravy off. I'll definitely not be so over zealous if it happens again.

What I did was pulled the top off the can, put it back down and then "squeezed" the gravy into another bowl....then I could give China just a teaspoon or 2 of the "gravy" (where most of the carbs are) without filling her up.

If you squeeze hard enough, you can get quite a bit of "gravy" out of that can...but it's messy!

O.k. we'll definitely reduce to the l.75. I'm going to be testing all night just to make sure he stays out of the neon green area.

I like that idea and I'll do it without fail if I ever have this happen again.

Fixed title. Yes testing will continue through the night.

It was actually a normal test at +3, that I decided to do a 1/2 hour earlier..so glad I did.

You're doing such a wonderful job keeping him safe. I hope he doesn't keep you too busy or up too late tonight. :coffee:
Be safe sweet Apple!
Have a great evening Caren:) You have a lot of eyes on you now if you need some assistance:bighug:
Thank you for the encouraging words! I'm retired so time is luckily not a problem :) We lost one beautiful boy to an inept Vet, so we're extra cautious with Apple and thank everyone on the board for everything we didn't know before.
You have a great evening, and thank you again!

Good catch!
Perfect example of why we like you to get a before bed test in each night :D
Have you retested again?
Sorry I didn't get back sooner, I have tested him 3 x's since the episode and he's currently +5 at 190. He's hiding which is unlike him, but other than that, the numbers are better. I'll test him in an hour, then every two hours after that.

Really not necessary. Get your sleep in when you can because trust me, as your journey through Feline Diabetes continues, you're going to have lots of other opportunities to stay up most of the night testing.

If you get 2 readings that are going up without having to feed him any more medium or high carb food, call it a night and get some rest!

We think he's already starting to bounce... how long should we hold this?
