Here we are again, after another nice surf last night here Mowgli is in a bounce. I am sure it wasn’t a fur shot this morning. Does anyone have any tips to mitigate these bounces?

I have started giving MC LC mix for supper and last night didn’t seem like that much of a dramatic drop that I should have seen a bounce today... thoughts and advice appreciated :)

Happy February everyone! Spring will be here before we know it :):)

Bouncing is maddening for sure. As Carla said, if there are big drops that you can catch and flatten out with some food is one way. Since you did give some MC in the dinner mix, maybe experiment with a little higher percentage to see if that helps.

Other than slowing fast drops, and trying to get Mowgs to spend as much time is safe green as he can do safely, there isn't a lot more you can do to stop bouncing. It took Neko a year to stop bouncing to reds. Then I got to work on getting rid of pinks. The one thing that helped most was moving to Levemir; but of course no guarantees. Some cats are just bouncy. Embrace the bounce - those are days you can do things for you.

Does Mowgli get a +1 meal? It helps to have fresh carbs on board just before onset.

@Bobbie And Bubba @carfurby i have been trying to up the carbs bit by bit, since he’s clearing bounces in the evening I think that’s making his onset extra aggressive. Even as early as +1!! Last nights drop wasn’t that aggressive with the LC/MC mix he had a nice safe slide so I was surprised he popped up this Morning. I think I will try the LC/MC mix again for supper tonight and see if I flatten him out.

I will usually try and get a +1, +1.5, or +2 if those readings are lower than the Pre-shot I usually give MC. otherwise I don’t give an additional snack early in the cycle since he is free fed LC. There were a few times in the past couple weeks that I thought (for some strange reason) I should try not giving the MC and seeing if He would actually drop... bad idea. If the +1-+2 is lower than the Pre-shot I know now that he needs intervention.

Mowgli has 1.5 pens of Lantus remaining and he’s approaching his 1year diagnosis. I was thinking of trying out Levemir, I’m just nervous about the *typical* pattern of a later onset since I’m at work ... do you think I should consider trying Levemir?

Lev is just an option, but remember ECID. Some cats on Lantus stop bouncing after a year. Some don’t. The later Lev onset and nadir can be challenging for some. At what point in the cycle do you get home from work? Neko’s Lev nadir was often at preshot, very convenient. The +5 onset(later than average), not so much.

Bouncing has been the biggest frustration for me. It is a bit of an experiment regarding extra carbs at meals and snacks, most definitely if you can have some carbs on board before onset, that may help some. I always found that Mav's worst bounces were when he hit his lows early in the cycle. I can't explain why that is, but it seems Mowgli is a little like that too. It may be worth trying to consistently feed +1, +2 and +3 regardless of the numbers, and see if that helps?

The jury is still out on Lev for us, but then it's only been a few days:). New patterns to get used to will be my biggest challenge. Our feeding schedule has been consistent for so long, so that needs adjusting as well. And nadirs at preshot...

Mowgli does look really good, and as Wendy said sometimes you just need to take the bouncing in stride and take a break and do something for yourself.

For sure! Mowgli doesn’t always bounce, and he’s definitely doing better than last year so I’m not mad at Lantus or anything... I’m happy with how far Mowgli has come .. BUT! I can’t help but wonder how he might do on levemir, especially if it might stop his super plummets (understanding that ECID)

I leave for work at +1 and I don’t get home from work until +11 so it could work out if mowgli would have a later nadir, but I would definitely be nervous about a later onset. And I could see some much later nights which could be hard for work. But also if it is a flatter cycle it could be worth it...

I’m just thinking about it ...what do you think based on Mowglis SS? Maybe I just need to be more diligent feeding the curve and see where that takes me... I still have about 4 months worth of Lantus left anyway.. but it doesn’t hurt to start thinking about it now.

It must be tough getting used to a new insulin, I’m definitely keeping a close eye on Mav’s progress to see how it’s going for you guys :)

I definitely am happy with how good Mowgli is doing but I can’t help but wonder if he might do better on Lev. Especially since he can take these hard dives.

usually I don’t care that much about bounces but this is a little unusual for him to be caught in such a bounce and drop cycle. I also don’t want to become complacent because he has been known to suddenly drop in an am cycle.

Tonight His +1 was only 275 so he might be calming the hard drops down. Fingers crossed
