Hendrix’s Story & Treatment

hello everyone, I just wanted to share my story so you know a little bit more about Hendrix and I.

I adopted Hendrix about 6 years ago, he was the sweetest boy ever I couldn’t resist. Hendrix is about 10 years old. The last 6 years with him have been amazing, he’s super duper friendly, snuggly, loving and caring. He’s always been at my side even through tough times as I have been at his. He sure loves his wet food, loves to watch bird videos on the television, he enjoys chasing and catching bugs and absolutely loves the sunshine.

This year he started peeing outside of his litter box but he was still a good boy any other time so it was hard to get upset about it really. I ended up getting concerned as it was happening a lot!! I eventually took him to a local vet to have him checked out. The vet said that because of him urinating outside of his box and his excessive thirst she wanted to test his BG level and see if we could go from there as she mentioned that is a sign of diabetes... I was nervous and sad. Once she got his test done his BG was around 40.1. I’m not going to lie, I wanted to drop to the floor....that day the vet had told me she thinks it would be a “good idea” to just put him at peace because treating diabetes is a hassle and she didn’t think his BG could ever be regulated. I refused up and down and cried for so long that they would even suggest that without letting me even try to help him. So when we arrived home that day I ended up switching his dry food for wet food but slowly transitioned. I also tried to do everything I could to find help for him because I did not want to lose him, he was my best buddy!!! I made a post on Facebook and a kind soul had told me about DCIN and to join the groups and give them a message, so I did. Until this day I’m forever thankful for being told about DCIN and everything they have done for Hendrix and I. With all their kind words, encouragement and support I was able to tell myself “I can help him fight this. I know I can.” I also went to buy a home testing kit as the vet was expensive for testing, let alone daily visits. Since changing his diet to wet food I got his BG levels down to the 20 range!! Then he started insulin treatment on January 16th which has been helping a lot. The first few weeks of starting insulin and home testing were very tough!! I’ve had good days and bad days.... being sad, tired, worried, nervous and very confused and had trouble getting his BG to stay below the 20 range. I did have a couple good days where it would be 15-17 range....but with all the research I’ve learned, the support and kindness I received from everyone in the groups including DCIN, I managed to push on and keep going no matter how tired I was.

It is now January 29th and I’m VERY proud to say that his BG levels have been brought down to the 4-6 range. The first time I ever seen his BG that low I shed so many happy tears and was so proud of him and myself!! He stopped peeing outside of his box, his coat looks shinier and healthier, he’s playful and snuggly again. I’m so very happy to see him back being happy and healthy. He’s the sweetest boy ever so to be able to tell myself “you did it, you’re saving him and helping him get better” makes me the happiest and proudest person in the world! I love him so very much and I’m super proud of him for doing so good and baring with me during testing and taking his insulin. I know it has been a struggle especially on both of our parts but he stuck with it, with me. We are still in the process of getting him better and I know it’s not a one day fix but I knew we can do it and I know we can keep pushing on to fight this. I just wanted to share my story for everyone to see as it makes me a super happy mommy that I tried and I succeeded to getting him better, slowly. I would never ever give up on him I told myself a million times that I’d do whatever it takes to keep my boy with me and get him healthy again. I will continue to share my success, stories, readings and more. It means the world to me what everyone has done for me and all the advice, support, love and encouragement that was shown to me as well. I’ll never forget it nor will hendrix. So a big thank you goes out to DCIN, all the admins and friends that helped us and gave us a huge amount of support along the way. ❤️

Welcome to the best place you never wanted to be!

This forum has a great deal of help, support, advice and sometimes, just a shoulder to cry on or a place to share your joy!

We start a new condo every day with post so that all of our forum members can follow along on each kitties' progress. So tomorrow please post a new thread like this 11/29 Hendrix AMPS ### - with your first BG of the day.

We've all been exactly where you are and have had our good days and bad with getting blood for the tests.

Here's some info about setting up your SS - I see you have one but you're using the metric system (World) and not the US system, so you may want to add that as many of us don't know how to interpret your numbers (I for one)...HOW TO SET UP FDMB SPREADSHEET: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/

Again welcome to the forum! I'm so glad you ignored that silly advice to 'put your kitty at peace' - my vet told me the same thing about Luci - that was over two years ago and she's doing just fine! So 'raspberries' to him for telling me that...and we're doing just fine to this day without him and his bad advice!

Enjoy your evening Crystal!

Thanks for sharing! What an awesome story! You and Hendrix are doing great :joyful:

I remember the relief that I felt when Mowgli stopped peeing excessively and his appearance / weight improved. Those details are the best for showing you just what a great job you’re doing taking care of Hendrix! I hope he continues to see these great numbers!

hope to see more of your posts soon :D Welcome :D:D

Hi there, yes. The forum has been a great amount of help for us for sure!

And I will be sure to keep everyone updated as best as possible with his BG levels!

You can actually switch the spreadsheet to tell you what the numbers mean, I learned this later on but it helps me a lot when I type in his BG levels and don’t know or I’m unsure what they are, I click the us button and it converts it automatically for me! :) it’s super helpful. Do you use the sheets app? You can do it that way!

Hello crystal ! Welcome I’m still new too . DCIN helped me as well ! It is a lot of work taking care of a diabetic cat but you loved your baby so much like I do my baby Salem . This is a great place to be ! It’s full of very nice helpful kind people . I dnt know where I would be without them . Your story sounds skit like all of us too . We would do anything to help our babies I’m glad you didn’t give up ! I dnt understand putting down these babies . You wouldn’t put down a human with diabetes .
It’s a lot to learn I’m still learning but these people here are so kind and so full of advice . They know more than the vets . I got lots of wrong advice from vets . I made a good choice listening to this board instead ! I’m so thankful . And they really care too !!! Be sure to print the stickys they help a lot . Read them over and over . I put mine in a notebook to keep to go back on . welcome !!!!
Hendrix’s is a lucky kitty ! My salem is doing good in such a short time he almost died from DKA . They saved my baby ! I even had one lady who lived close to me she came over gave me supplies and helped me get started . @Sandi & Whisper . She even came over at ten o’clock at night when salems sugar first went low and taught me how to keep him safe ! She was so nice and helpful to me ! I’m so grateful to all here !!!

Hello and welcome. I hope you will set up a spreadsheet. It will help us help you. I also hope you found a new vet and so glad you didn’t listen to your vet! In my opinion she needs to get a new career.

@Crystal Kelsey ...have you got more tests in today? That quick drop from AMPS to +3 is a concern

I know !!! Im kind of worried as well he’s been doing so good but yesterday he dealt with a lot of stress from my neighbours unfortunately. They were yelling outside and I don’t know if it scared him or not..I wasn’t too happy. Also his BG went from 252 and then I tested him at 530am and it was 77.....so I fed him some food and I’m going to retest him to see where he’s at. I don’t like how he drops so big like that

Welcome. Glad you did not listen to vet. Actually hope you go back and set them straight. Can only imagine how many of their clients listened.

Looking forward to following Hendrix.
I never went back there that’s for sure and I know it makes me sad to think how many kitties they did that to that could have been saved....
