I know there have been people who used rapid acting insulins in conjunction with Lantus, I'm curious if over the years, on FDMB there have been any attempts by CGs to use Lantus with oral meds like Glipizide? Would this be an option to try with bouncier kitties? I haven't had a chance to ask my vet yet, but I had thought perhaps someone here might have some input?

Speaking of bouncing, Mav's in good form today, but he's currently chasing Jester down the hall, so I won't tell him he's in stinky pinkies.
 
Thanks @Briere Fur Mom I did follow that one closely, it was interesting. I will be switching to Lev in the next week, I never really had the appetite to consider R for Mav since he's really not doing all that badly overall.

I like to do a lot of reading in old posts as well, it helps me get a broader perspective. I did see in older posts that generally the oral meds either don't usually work and/or can be very hard on the pancreas. I was just speculating whether short term use in conjunction with a longer acting insulin like Lantus might correct some of the bounces.

I think a better approach to try first for Mav is to try to slow his wicked drops with food. 328 to 77 in four hours! No wonder he bounced. I hope you left lots of food out after that 61. ;) Actually, I think Lev will help too.

From what I have seen in kitties who had glipizide first, it’s a struggle getting them regulated. R insulin, if not given carefully, can also increase the speed of the drops, making things worse.
 
Oops, sorry I missed that one when I was adding all my older data :oops:, he was fed and back up to 118 by +6. He gets minimeals around +2 and 3, then again at +4 and +6. He shouldn't have dropped like that, but this is what he does.

So no one has done both oral meds and insulin at the same time with cats for a short term? Especially long term diabetics? Again, just curious, it really is more for my education, I'm not planning to do that. We'll start Lev on Thursday when I can monitor more closely into the weekend.

As far as oral meds, not seen it in my time here. Can’t say never, not that old. :p
 
Oral meds, like glipizide, work very differently than insulin. Essentially, glipizide over stresses and ultimately burn out the pancreas which is why they are not recommended with cats since cats can go into remission. At least with humans, I've never seen either Glipizde or Metformin used with an injectable insulin.

My mom is currently on Lantus 4 u once a day and taking 10 mg of Glipizide in the AM and 5 mg of Glipizide in the PM.
