Not eating

George is not eating. He has not had anything to eat since before 2pm today. I called the ER Vet and they said to withhold all food until 7am tomorrow. Obviously, I did not give him insulin. Any suggestions?

Good. He just came downstairs and ate two bites of soft food, and then went back upstairs. He is not disoriented or anything. I will continue food at 7am, and 1 1/2U of Lantus at 7:25 am.

He never really refuses food. Lately. In the past week, I've had to pick up and then set down his food dish, about 10 times for him to continue to eat. Now, he is by my side, and wants food. I don't know what to do. I want to keep him on this insulin schedule. Food at 7am and insulin at 7:25am or 7:30am, and 12 hours later.

Most of us feed many meals a day, it isn't just at shot time. Give him food, he's hungry and wants to eat. You can still give insulin at your usual time tomorrow.

I did. He only ate 2 bites and went back upstairs. If I left food out all night, he would never come for breakfast, thus no insulin.
 
There is a big difference between giving him a little snack now and feeding all night. If you find that he's full from eating too much all night long, then feed a little snack now and call it a night. Many of us give mini meals up until around 5-6 hours after insulin. Then nothing after that until preshot.
 
Sylvia, you need to start working closely with your vet.

You need to ask your vet questions on why he is saying certain things.

Write down what your vet says. Exactly. Take notes and ask your vet to repeat things if you do not understand them. Ask the vet 'Why ' he says to do certain things. Your vet should have a good understanding of feline diabetes and should be able to explain it to you.

You seem to have a difficult time understanding what we tell you here on the message board. I think you are having the same difficulties with your vet, understanding what they are telling you and why.

The message board is not for everyone. Some people do not have good computer skills. Some people have vision problems and can't see well. Some people have anxiety or another medical condition that makes it hard for them to understand what is written. Some people speak and write a language other than English.

We realize this is frustrating and very stressful dealing with a diabetes diagnosis for your beloved cat George. How can we make it better?

Sylvia, you only need to pick up the food a few hours before you do your AMPS and PMPS. Cats love to graze all day with small meals. The insulin you are using does not act immediately on their sugars rather it is released slowly over 12 hours. I am also confused as to why your vet would have said to withhold the food until the morning?? Have you tried to prick George on the big pad of his back feet?? I would cradle my Charlotte like a baby and prick her pad then check her blood with the meter. Have you tried this way?? My Charlotte was not always a big fan of having her ears pricked either.
