MrWorfMen's Mom recently lost one of her cats and Marje and Gracie are on vacation. So I'm trying to 'pinch hit' and help out a little bit in this forum. I don't know any of the other members that help out with Prozinc.
Not as experienced with Prozinc as some of the other insulins, but pretty good with general advice. It's the microdosing and SS interpretation that still throws me off a bit. Don't know why, but Caninsulin SS's are easier for me to interpret, and see the changes needed. I'm more experienced with lantus and NPH (so can help a bit with Vetsulin/Caninsulin which is basically like a longer duration NPH).
Your concern is not with the dose, not with the specific insulin you had used, since Socks isn't on insulin currently. So here goes. Some ideas/notes/thoughts/brainstorming from me.
- He may have lost remission, so how is the amount of his peeing? Has that increased? Bigger puddles in the litter box?
- Drinking a lot more water?
- Purring normal?
- Pooping normal?
- Playing normal?
- How is the condition of his fur? Flakes of dandruff, dull, lifeless? or still nice and shiny? Is he grooming himself?
- Showing signs of weakness in back legs? Neuropathy.
- Does he seem a little off? acting differently than normal? Besides the begging for food (increased appetite)
- Did you move? Get a new pet? Something changed to stress him out?
- New cat in neighborhood, coming around your place?
- Those mid blues on the SS are concerning. Get some random PM tests too if you can. Remember the "before bed" test?
- Test your cat like you would do for an OTJ trial. Using the 3 steps below.
- Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas). The morning test is now called the AMBG. The evening test is now called the PMBG.
- If your cat is green (0-99 mg/L human meter, 0-130 mg/L pet meter, 0-5.5 mmoL) at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If the numbers are blue or higher (100-199 human meter, 130-230 pet meter, 5.5-11 mmoL), feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. Food raises BG's. So if the number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
After 1 week, if everything is looking good Socks might have had a kitty cold or slight UTI. Had some higher blues happen with my kitty, when he got a kitty cold, sneezing, runny eyes.
If numbers are still high, I'd see a vet. Not sure, but you might want to shorten the wait time and see the vet sooner than a week. Maybe 3-4 days of BG testing will help you decide.
If your cat does fall out of remission you need to be more aggressive and resolve issues/ back on insulin as soon as possible as the window for a second remission is tight if any. Pancreatitis, hyperthyroid, dental issues are the most common reasons cats fall out of remission.
He may have something else going on to cause the weight loss, such as hyperthyroidism. So I think a vet visit is in order sooner rather than later.
Hope that helps.
