Glucose testing

Ok maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot but every link so far I'm clicking for glucose testing reference on the forumn is not working! I finally got a weather break and waiting for Walmart to say my order is ready.. got the meter and strips. (Still trying to find what lance tool and such to use thus the panic over the links not working!)
 
The 30 gauge will work. They are a bit thinner than a 28 gauge. Just don't get frustrated if you don't get blood on the first (or subsequent) tries. If you don't get blood, try to poke again as close to the original spot as possible.

You can always order lancets online if you need to. ADW is a good source for supplies.

Yeah I figured I'd get my 1st set of everything then have breathing space to order supplies online
 
Lancets that say 'For alternate site testing' are good when you first start testing.

Could you tell us what links you are trying to access? So we can figure out if we gave you the wrong link or where the issue is?

Ok, a lot of those links on the Main Feline Diabetes page website are not working. If you can give more specifics as to which ones you clicked on, I'll try to pass that info on to the person that maintains that data, who is the owner of that website. No one here can do the fixes. As you can imagine with a completely volunteer organization, it's hard to keep things updated. We need more volunteers!

Ok I have achieved initial supplies! ReliOn ketone test strips, ReliOn ultra thin Lancers 30g and the ReliOn premier classic tester what a headache Walmart canceled half my order for pickup and I had to go find everything solo. Grrrrrr
 
I feel like such a bad fur parent! I just tried to do the blood test on Newnie.. he was the least wild when rescued.. EPIC FAIL. I could have done a blood test on myself after.. did I mention I'm on blood thinners?.. well seams Newnie has just one tiny tiny vein that runs near the edge .. I tried 3 times to get it.. I made him bleed the 3rd time, then immediately he made me bleed .it wasnt enough to make the test go and clotted to fast..I wanna cry.
 
It can definitely be a traumatic experience the first time you try to poke for blood. It's good to establish a routine and make it a positive experience (treats, doing it in a safe place, singing, petting kitty before and after). I also strongly believe in our energy affecting our pet's energies. So YOU also need to be in a good place. So breathe, stay calm, and try your best.

Keep trying too! I hope it gets better for you and Newnie. And I'm sorry Newnie gave you some battle scars :(

With the ear, we try to poke beside the vein. That's usually the sweet spot. You can also try the inside or outside of the ear.

I use paw pads and alternate with his ears. The first few times I set up to test- I didn't actually . He just got rewarded for tolerating the time spent and me manipulating the ears/feet while we waited.

I'll have to try to get a picture of his ear. Like it was insane trying to swap between the warm water filled pill bottle which he didnt mind to the flashlight to the Lancet and ugh! And of course .. black and tuxedo cat.. I didnt even try on tomtom tonight I was too upset and hes packs a way bigger punch.after the 1st attempt on Newnie I could see the sort of knot I made in his blood vessel which I hope goes away.. not really a knot but it was a smooth straightish line now it has an small spot.. soon as he feels the poke a pulls away. I'd be nervous about paw lance.. they dig to china in their cat boxes that sounds like a recipe for infections
 
Here are some things I found worked for me to test my black eared kitty with long ear floof.

My top tip is to shave a tiny spot on your cat's ear with a safety razor, going very lightly over that spot on the outer edge where you want to be testing. As you get better with testing, you can let the fur grow back.

1. Find a testing spot where you can put a clip on light. Instead of feeling like you are fumbling back and forth between flashlight and lancet. I shone that light down on the ears of my black eared kitty.
2. Pick out a normal testing spot. Maybe your bathroom counter or someplace quiet and take your cat there. Someplace you can close the door and not have any other cats (or people) interrupting you.
3. Get all your testing tools out and ready.
4. Try a tiny bit of triple antibiotic ointment with pain relief before the poke. Can help the blood bead up and make it easier to see on black eared kitties.
5. Deep breath, hold, release, deep breath, hold, release. Now start singing to your kitty, even if you can't carry a tune to save your life. Helps to calm you and your cat.
6. Now poke.

Have you looked at that •Ear Testing Psychology• document yet? Think of it as the 'Zen of ear testing' method.
 
Ok fail round 2.. tomorrow I shall acquire one of those little hair trimmers.. much smaller flashlight.. and a lancet holder.. I'm so worried all the work I've done to make these cats friendly all the headway I am going to loose and alienate them with all this poking and prodding
 
The post on Glucose testing added here is a little bit confusing especially due to the vagueness of the post. https://htaba.com/ I have been trying to find a good instrument and was expecting to see a good choice here. I hope someone could help me with my search.
 
@B.Davis Looks like you are very new here, since I see you just joined yesterday. Please start your own individual thread. We try to give individualized suggestions to focus on what you need to know. With your own thread, that will be much easier to do and less confusing for MamaJen. Thank you.

To do that, go to the top of the forum and click on Post New Thread. Put in a title. Introduce yourself and your cat, and tell us what you are looking for information on. Also tell us what country you are in please.
