? Snickers Doing Well but I Have Questions

Hi,

Snickers is doing well, but I feel like her numbers are trending slightly higher lately. A few weeks ago we were getting PMPS numbers in the 70s, the last week or two they've been in the 90/low 100s.

And yesterday we had an AMPS +6 of 108 (RT @ 92), which is a little high for a +6 for Snickers. Her nadir is usually around +2/+3, and her +6 in the 60s/70s. Today her +6 was 76, which is better, but her +8 was just 96. And her morning AMPS seems trending higher lately to me too.

I don't know, I guess my concern is that a few days ago we made the full switch from MC wet to LC wet only, and I expected her numbers to go down. So I don't get why they seem higher to me. Maybe I'm just being impatient?

I also wondered if it's okay her nadir is at +2/+3 or if she might do better on Levemir instead of Lantus? I read somewhere that Levemir works better for some cats, but haven't done too much research into it yet. Just looking for some unbiased opinions on ...

1) How Snickers' numbers look.
2) Should I hold her dose or raise/lower it?
3) Is a nadir of +2/+3 okay or might she do better on Levemir?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Snickers looks amazing!!! I don’t have dosing advice but just wanted to wish you and Snickers a good year. Hopefully beautiful things are in store for the both of you :bighug:

Nothing wrong with early nadirs. It's great that you can just monitor for a few hours after PMPS then get some sleep. Not uncommon for lower doses and mostly green cats.

What is your current feeding schedule for Snickers? When kitties are on a tiny dose, such as she is, it may help to feed a small snack at +8 or +9, to try to kick start the pancreas to hopefully bring down those preshots numbers. It would be great to see her go a week in all green, which would earn the nest reduction. Hold the dose and try the food experiment to see if you can get rid of those blues.

Food changes can take a couple weeks to fully show the results. So, yes, you are being impatient. ;)

Lol, thank you. I had the feeling I was being a bit impatient. It's hard to tell sometimes when it's your cat. I feed her once in the morning before her shot, once in the night before her shot, and then kind of scatter her snacks or sometimes skip them. I haven't exactly worked out her snacking schedule.

This week I will nail down her snacking schedule. My vet really wants her eating only twice a day, so I guess I've been reluctant to give her snacks regularly though I know people here definitely do. I will sort that out and try giving her a small snack at +8 and maybe +4. I'll figure it out and stick to it. Thanks for the advice and encouragement. :)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe vets push for twice a day feedings because they’re used to working with other insulins like Vetsulin — but even that idea I believe has changed recently. But having food on board throughout the day makes it easier for the pancreas.

Also something that my mom, as an RN, could not wrap her head around when our old vet suggested that was human diabetics don’t only eat twice a day. They eat small meals to help better regulate blood sugar.

That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for that. I love my vet but she does admit she doesn't know everything, which is one reason I like her. I'll definitely figure out a snacking schedule for Snickers and make sure I stick to it. My vet will ultimately believe the results :)
