Blood in Mum’s urine..

Been a while. Things have been relatively peaceful... however Mum has had blood in her urine for the second time in 7 or so months.. she was given a pain killing injection an a long acting anti biotic injection a couple of days ago.

She seemed fine yesterday but blood still there this evening. Mum in some pain. Back to vets tomorrow...
Wondered if any one uses any pain medication other than Loxicom/Metacam? Something I could give her to ease her pain at times I can’t get to the vet? (Night time here in London). Many thanks.
 
Has the vet mentioned that it could be Idiopathic Cystitis and not a UTI.?
Flare ups of IC can cause pain, blood in urine, other symptoms similar to a UTI.
Treatment includes but not confined to, reducing stress, using Feliway defussers or collars, giving extra fluids...

After thinking my cat Sheba had continual UTIs I found out it was IC and things improved once I put strategies in place to manage it.
 
The assumption was that it could be cystitis OR UTI and they thought injection etc WD help... I have Felliway in place as my two cats do not get on .. so yes it could be stress.. very hard to manage two cats in a small space... doing my best... not sure what else to do...
 
Sorry to hear this, Zee. I don't know about alternatives to Metacam but I did Google it only recently - my Sapphire is going for a dental soon and they will give her a painkiller and I'd rather it wasn't Metacam. There don't seem to be many acceptable alternatives so maybe it's ok for occasional but constant use - I don't know. I'm planning to ask the vet but I'm pretty sure they won't have much to say - ask yours and let us know.

I hope Mum feels better soon - maybe the antibiotics will do the trick.
 
For cats that don't tolerate oral meds, especially oral BUPE.
I've used transdermal BUPE on and off for years for rotten teeth, broken bones and even UTI before treatment. It's expensive but the worst part of a cats day becomes having their ears tickled. There is absolutely no reason any cat needs to be miserable. The dilution and dosing are always at the top of my profile, never mind the "under construction" part. :)

With UTI one thing that helps a lot is d-mannose, it is not medicine so you will need antibiotics anyway but it does help clear the UTI faster and with the inflammation (specially if it is ideopatic) so you could try giving it to him.

You can give between 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon twice a day, when there's a crisis I usually give 1/4 teaspoon twice a day which I dissolve in 3ml of water and syringe to them that way I'm sure they got it all and add to their water consumption, but it can be added to the food too. I've used it on Babu and it doesn't affect his BG ( I think it has to do with the fact that it appears is not absorbed by the digestive tract) but you may need to monitor your baby
 
Andy and Marco had constant UTI issues. After we switched all our civvies to Royal Canin SO it's been a non-issue.
I don't have a microscope handy to read the label re carbs.
 
All valuable stuff. Mum somewhat better.. I gave her a low dose of Loxicom with her food.. won’t do it every day... I’m considering some of the ‘natural’ stuff like D mannose..

Still some blood in urine... got some d-mannose to try... if persist will have to do a more precise diagnosis. She’s eating and drinking fine tho...

Hi Veronica. Thank you for your good advise - just got some D-mannose for Mum and mixed a small amount into water. I used a syringe ... now fingers crossed.. how long did it take for it to work on Babu??

I've found it can be a bit variable between cats and depending on how bad all is but I've noticed they start acting a bit more normal after around 3 days (less trying to pee etc), after the crisis passed I continued giving the D-manose with about 1/8 every day for about a month and I still give 1/8 once or twice a week as a maintenance dose
 
Did the vet get a sterile urine sample (i.e., inserting a needle into the bladder -- cystocentesis) and run a culture and sensitivity? The only way to know if your kitty was giving an appropriate antibiotic given what the infection may be is to have a culture and sensitivity. Do you know what antibiotic Zee was given? It sounds like it may have been Convenia (cefovecin). Vets seem to like this antibiotic despite that fact that its only indication is for skin infections. If this is what the vet gave your cat, it's probably not having an effect on whatever is causing the infection.

Metacam (meloxicam) and all of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories can be very hard on kidneys. The prescribing of these meds is a bit different outside of the US. (Here, the FDA has issued what's called a black box warning for meloxicam which is one step below it being prohibited for use in cats.) Outside of the US, the dosing is in smaller amounts and for shorter periods of time.
 
Thank you Sienna. No test whatsoever just an assumption... yes it was convenient and very expensive it was too... I’m not giving Mum Loxicom at the mo. Just keeping it for a real emergency.. I’m giving her D-mannose in a tiny bit of live yogurt...
we had a restless night - I think she might be a bit constipated but no blood..
hoping she’ll improve with the D-mannose..
