Blackie is home , we got in late last night. And he made it through the night. Thank God! He's my Thanksgiving miracle. So testing this AM he is 160. He last ate a little at midnight he was still in the 45 then. Vet recommended 2 units this AM. Any thoughts? I haven't fed him yet either. Thanks to all for talking me through yesterday. I really thought I was going to lose him.

Good Morning Sherry! I'm so THRILLED that Blackie is back home safe and sound! WHEW!!! What a close call!

I saw the conversations from yesterday and I know there was mention of a dose reduction.

Do you have any numbers from last night that you could fill in on your SS?

After what you and Blackie have been through I think I'd lean toward being very conservative with the dose until you can test him more often - are you home today? Is he eating well? Those are the things that would help me decide what to do. There's something going on that would bring him down from that high of a reading at the a.m. to 20 by 8+; the question is what was it?

I don't know how long you have to weigh your decision this morning - and it would be good if some of the advisors who helped you yesterday were to weigh in as I missed out on most of it...but I'm feeling a bit 'gun-shy' myself about the whole thing and would probably go with 2 units as long as he's eating well!

If not, wait - we can tag some senior members and get some more opinions.

I just updated SS. I'm home all day the next 4 days. He ate some but not as much as usual. Maybe an ounce of wet , if that.

Do you have freeze dried chicken or any meat product? Fortiflora? I crush and sprinkle that over Luci's wet food to tempt her to eat a little more.

Did the vet give you some BG readings last night? If so, could you please add them to the SS?

Hi Sue,
I do have Forta Flora I'll do that. I can add the vets readings they took 2. One was 53 when we got there and 100 after an hour of glucose drip.

I agree with Sue -- I'd like to be sure that Blackie is in the mood for food. You and your kitty have been through the ringer. I'd hate to suggest insulin and have the numbers tank.

Just as an FYI, after a bout of low numbers, some cats are very sensitive to insulin. That's my tactful way of saying you're going to need to monitor to make sure this isn't the case with Blackie. If he's interested in food and eating, I'd probably drop the dose to 1.5u just to be on the very safe side especially if you are going to be busy with the holiday. (That, and it's always easier to increase a dose vs deal with low numbers.)

While I suspect you will never want to leave home again, I do have a suggestion for the future. Even though I had a vet tech taking care of Gabby when I travelled, I ALWAYS left a sample syringe with colored water (juice, coffee, etc.) with the proper dose drawn up. I also reduced Gabby's dose if I was traveling. Even with all of my precautions, I did come home after one trip with Gabby in the 30s so it does happen. I'd also make sure that you have your pet sitter leave a timed feeder so there's food throughout the cycle.

Thank you for weighing in @Sienne and Gabby (GA)! I agree...I'd say be very conservative this morning...you can always add if needed...but fighting another hypo situation...not what you want to do. Like I said, gun shy...

Give him a little time to settle out...and get that appetite going..

Thank you . I'm definitely rethinking my travel plans. Happy Thanksgiving!

Have you given him a shot this morning? Any other tests after that 160 to see if he's going up or down? I like Sienne's suggestion of a half-dose, to get some insulin in him, but it sure would be nice if he would eat something. Did the vets last night note any other issues with him other than the low BG numbers?

I'm still just so impressed at how you handled that 20 yesterday-- sooooo scary   !

No I didn't give him one. They didn't run other tests as the cost was exorbitant for me. They wanted over 2 k for overnight stay and tests. I can check him now. He ate a little this morning. It was ridiculously scary. I'm still freaked out. But grateful for everyone here.

Glad Blackie is okay. You did a great job yesterday, Sherry. It is not an easy thing to do. What happened is still a mystery and you are still seeing the effects of it. Give the lad a special place at the table tonight.

I'm craving apple pie thanks to @Amy&TrixieCat and @Sienne and Gabby (GA) . Hope your pies turned out well.
Thank you ! Through all this I managed to make 2 pies myself. French Silk and Pumpkin. Blackie will be the guest of honor . Thanks for being there. It means more than I could ever say.

I know you are very grateful today that your boy is safe and sound. Good call NS today. After numbers that low that can be extremely sensitive to insulin.

Happy Thanksgiving!

OMG! Sherry! You're a supermom and superwoman! I'm so glad that it was a great outcome. Set a timer to remind you to test - lots of distractions there today...want to make sure he doesn't do anything crazy again today! :bighug::bighug:
