11/24 Biscuit 76/70/61/56/54 AMPS +1 54 +2 58

You shot in the 70s on the 16th so if he holds steady or is starting to rise, you can shoot. Did you retest again since the 56 reading without feeding?

Had he gone up from the 76 I would have been totally comfortable. I just don’t understand why he keeps dropping... is it just due to lack of his morning meal? At this point we are 1:45 mins behind normal shot time and breakfast.

You are about an hour late now. Can you stall another 15 minutes without feeding and not be in trouble schedule wise tomorrow?. Looks like he's may have stopped dropping now and you can shoot that 54 if you are up for it with plenty of supplies.

My DH is home with him but I can go home if nec. I’m helping at my mom’s only 15 mins away. My son tried to get a tear this am and was already 30 mins late when he woke my DH to take over. Hence the 1:45. But we work from home so off schedule is not an issue and I do have plenty of supplies.

Ok so just see if he is holding and then I'd shoot. If you are uncomfortable giving the full dose you could reduce to 0.5u but with DKA history, better to get some insulin in him. Is he chewing your leg off yet?

Just looking at spreadsheet it looks like he had his 3rd time below 50 at the 0.75u dose on the 21st. Was there some reason you didn't reduce to 0.5u in the AM on the 22nd?

It was the calipers that we discussed and only reducing to 0.62. They came and we were planning on using them today but I definitely could just reduce the dose to 0.5 at least for this am shot. Ok now he’s at 51

Seems he's stopped dropping so I'd feed him and shoot now and monitor closely starting with a +1. You can do the 0.5u dose for this AM if that is easier.
K. Did one last test. Stayed at 51. Giving a 0.5u. At 11:30 (once he gets I’m drawn and onboard it will 11:30 that is.) so +1 will be easier to calculate too.

I’m also sorry I missed the tag. I’d like to offer a little hindsight lesson :):)

It was clear he was likely starting to clear a bounce last night and he really telegraphed it this morning, didn’t he! At any rate, because you’ve got plenty of data, you’ve shot similar numbers, you had supplies and could monitor, there was absolutely no reason to stall. It’s much better, as long as he’s above 50, to shoot on time with the full dose (making sure you are giving the correct full dose....see below) and then feed a solid LC meal and test at +1.

For a general lesson for the next time (and again, this wouldn’t apply here because you should have reduced his dose to 0.5u a couple days ago ....see below): normally, stalling and then decreasing the dose is a double whammy. When we stall, we don’t shoot a BCS (caveat: there are always extenuating circumstances but this wasn’t one of them). However, there was not even a reason to stall ;)

What can happen when you stall when the bounce is clearing is exactly what you saw: the numbers just keep dropping and, sometimes, to where you must skip because they are below 50. When you shoot a BCS, and as you can also see, his cycle is going to do the same thing it would have if you’d shot 0.75u at least until the mid to late cycle (again speaking in generalities as if he hadn’t earned a reduction already). However, he had earned a dose reduction for three drops between 40-50 on separate days and so shooting the 0.5u should have been your plan anyway. In fact, you should have reduced on 11/22. If you haven’t read it before, you might want to read this post on Reductions and see what happened to us when we missed a similar reduction. It wasn’t pretty :p The depot can really get ahead of you fast and you “could" be dealing with that today. I’m really glad you are on top of it and testing and feeding early. Great job!!

Libby, who was another super experienced member who doesn’t post anymore, told me once that, for the most part, stalling and skipping are for the CG and not the cat. While there may be extenuating circumstances (e.g. sick cat or CG unable to monitor) where it might help to stall a bit or skip. in general, and esp with a DKA history, shooting on time with the full current dose is best.

Please let me know if this helps and if you have any questions. Paws crossed for a safe surf:D:D and, again, sorry I missed your tag this morning.

He’s doing good. It only me who is a basket case :banghead::nailbiting::banghead:

It takes time to get used to this roll....try to roll with it as best you can...Marje has given you some excellent advice. Next time you see a high green, you're going to take a deep breath and tell yourself that 'you've got this'. You're prepared with your supplies and you're going to be home to monitor. I dream of shooting green numbers and occasionally I get to have that wonderful privilege.

I know it's scary when it happens rarely but look at it like this - he's getting better! And at some point you're going to have to shoot greens and be around to monitor. Look at some of the kitties with really low numbers like @Briere Fur Mom, @Tina Marie and Jan, @Bellasmom - those ladies are shooting greens lots of times - join that club and if Biscuit is cooperating - shoot those lower numbers.

There's a saying around here - shoot low to stay low. Of course you don't want to shoot below 50 - but anything above that is fair game.

Have a glass of wine or whatever helps you relax and get ready for next time. You're right where we all want to be - surfing that beautiful sea of green today.:bighug::bighug:

Hi Shannon! Biscuit is looking great, today especially - so precious looking too. Four months ago, I never dreamt I'd be excited to shoot a number under 100. As time went on, I got braver, and even learned what has been said above -- it is better for the cat to go ahead and shoot on time, and learn to appreciate those beautiful 50s and 60s, which are numbers a non diabetic cat would have. Keep posting any time you feel worried or need assurance -- you are doing great;)
