Dosage adjustment needed?

Hi! So I am not anywhere as experienced as some of the other members but it looks like you need to get more values especially +1 +2 and then mid cycle to get a better grasp on whether the cycle is climbing, staying flat or falling in between amps and PMPS. I would start there as well as observing if your kitty is drinking the same, less, more and what the puddle sizes look like aside from the hard numbers. Also, I’d be checking the ketones to make sure those start quietly rise unbeknownst to you. DKA can be costly to correct never mind making your kitty feel lousy. You can get the urine strips at any pharmacy, Walmart etc. I usually get a urine sample by lining the litter box with glad wrap on top of the litter with a little nonabsorbable cat litter sprinkled on top for her scratch at. Kit4cat can be purchased at amazon. I’m sure some of the helpful gurus will be chiming in shortly!!

Ok, got it. We will get more values. His water consumption is good, his eating is the same as always eating every hour or so. We have ketone test strips but haven't caught a stream yet. He's not our only cat so it's difficult. We're a house of rescues.
Thank you for replying!

Ah, yes! I have 6 cats but my sugar baby and me have been hanging out in one bedroom especially when I need to do certain checks with her or when she is fed- piggies come around looking at her stuff!! Ugh!!

It is great to see Apple’s picture, what a cutie.

Have you looked at the Dosing Methods Sticky Note and decided which one you’d like to follow? If so, could you put TR or SLGS in your signature, so we know better how to help you. However, at this point, regardless of dosing method, Miss Apple need a dose increase. Time to go up to 1.25 units.

In future, you don’t want to hold a dose overly long, if it’s not giving you numbers you want. With SLGS you evaluate the dose every week, and if you aren’t seeing numbers between 90 and 149, you increase. With TR, you evaluate every 3-5 days, depending on the nadirs.

Thank you for the reply. Reading the information is a bit overwhelming, but I believe the SLGS is probably where we're at right now.
We will definitely raise his dosage l.25 units this evening. Are there times for testing that are an absolute for this method and a curve at the end of seven days? Until I feel confident at looking at his numbers with some expertise, can I request a look see from the forum?
Funny aside, we have a Dorian Grey, Violet Nightshade, Claire de Lune, Carbon Copy then you let a 7 year old name a cat and you get an Apple, who is a male.

I don't think you need to routinely get a +1 test. The +1 often reflects a food spike. However, I would encourage you to get a test every, single night before you go to sleep (the infamous "before bed" test). This lets you go to sleep knowing that Apple is in safe numbers.

I agree with Wendy. If you're going to follow SLGS, you evaluate the effectiveness of the dose on a weekly basis. (FYI - you are testing enough to use TR provided you are not giving Apple and dry food, which it looks like you're not.) I would raise the dose to 1.25u.

I have no preference to either of the dosing methods..so let me get this right, you evaluate the TR on a 3-5 day time frame as opposed to the weekly with 7 days? I know I'm missing a lot of other information in the dosings, but relatively speaking is that about it?
Apple is up all night long, he stands on my chest and pats my chin with his nails for food.

The choice of TR or SLGS is a personal one, based on your lifestyle and interest/ability to test. TR has a lower reduction number, so it’s important to be able to get some tests close to nadir.

As for asking for dose advice, yes please! Anytime you want to check in. My girl got to a higher dose, and it seemed like I was constantly asking whether I should increase. For us, TR was a better choice because it allowed me to increase faster and get her out of her initial ugly numbers.

Times for testing depend on your schedule too. As Sienne recommended, those tests before you go to bed are a good one to get. Many cats go lower at night. Any time you can grab a test in middle of the day is good. A curve helps you pinpoint when Apple’s nadir is, and will allow you to be more strategic about testing. Every cat is different. Although the typical nadir is +6, it varies a lot. Sienne’s Gabby often nadired at +2, my Neko typically from +7 to +9, but sometimes earlier or later.

What that tells me is I have a lot more reading to do. I know nadir is the lowest number of the cycle..right, and sporadic testing will uncover what that is. We'll stay on the 1.5 and see where we go in the next 3 to 5 days.
Thanks for the help, I've got to get his numbers lower.

You don’t need to stay on this dose. You do enough testing to tell us her nadirs are still to high. Time to increase.

There is also a downside to holding a dose too long that isn’t giving you the numbers you want. Their bodies get used to higher numbers and it takes more increases to get over that.

Correct that last post to 1.25. We'll get the tests in and go from there. Thanks again! Oh one more thing, I wonder because he eats so much our numbers are being skewed, when I do withhold food for 2 hours the numbers seem to go up.
