GA Delilah not eating and numbers are low

Delilah has been treated for an infection a few weeks ago and I opened a new Lantus pen over the weekend because I felt like her old one wasn’t working. She hasn’t eaten since yesterday morning and just threw up yellow looking liquid. I am on my way to the vet but wanted to see what you all thought. Her sugar was 96 this morning. Thank you.

The pancreatitis test, if needed, is either a Spec fPL or a Snap fPL. The former can be run in the office (It looks like a pregnancy test) vs the Snap needing to be sent out.

Once you know what the vet has to say, can I encourage you to test more than twice a day? I suspect you may need to reduce Delilah's dose and there's no way to know for sure without some spot checks.

Thank you all for your responses. She stayed at the vet today for IV fluids except they couldn’t get an IV established so she got sub q fluids three times. I brought her home tonight but am taking her back in the morning to try again. She has short legs like the munchkin breed, and she was dehydrated.

The vet thinks it’s a kidney issue. Last week she was in and had bloodwork done and I was told her kidneys were good. During the past week she had started peeing outside of the litter box, but we are integrating her into our multi cat household so I had chalked it up to that transition.

Her urine was very dilute. She had still been drinking but not eating the past day. I honestly am not sure she is going to make it through the night. I’ve only had her for a month. She was in foster care for months after her owners took her to a shelter due to her diabetes last June.

I am aware that I need to test more often. I hope I get that chance.

Poor little thing! I hope you get a chance to test more - even an hour after her shot would be helpful...so hard to know how low her dose has been taking her. I hope she'll be ok. She's adorable! You're a lovely person to take her in after all she's been thru. :bighug::bighug:

:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:Kidney disease doesn’t come on quickly unless an acute form. If so have the vets don’t a culture and sensitivity to check for infection and an ultrasound to check for stones?

I am exhausted. They got the IV today and I left her there overnight for fluid treatment. I have read up on feline kidney disease, but I have never had a kitty going through this. The vet was recommending euthanasia today. I thought that a minimum of two or three days of IV fluids was standard treatment. I feel horrible for asking them to continue her fluids for a few days when they seemed to want to steer me to putting her down. I hope that missing the first day of fluids hasn’t set her back so much that she won’t make it through the night. The vet seemed to think that both conditions aren’t treatable and that it would be more humane to let her go. :(

I’m so sorry that you and Delilah are going through this. Kidney disease in cats is not an automatic death sentence, by any means. This site:
https://felinecrf.org/ has a great wealth of information on that subject, as well as a lot of hope.
Have you considered speaking with another vet? Especially since her bloodwork from last week indicated that her kidneys were good.
You are doing everything you can for your kitty. Please let us know how things are going . Hugs to you both :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yes, I found that site last year (another cat), and I have been consulting it all day. I think my vet means well. She just didn’t want to see Delilah suffer. I hope my little girl can make it through the weekend and get a chance to get better.

Thank you all for the reassurance.

If her kidneys were ok last week, they don’t deteriorate to the point of euthanasia in a week.
I would be seeking another opinion.
I see quite a few vets here recommend euthanasia far too soon and most times the cat recovers well.
Best wishes

The vet called me this morning and told me that Delilah passed overnight. I guess I made the wrong decision last night.

I am so sorry to hear about Delilah :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I can only imagine how painful it must be to hear of that news this morning but I don't think you made the wrong decision. You wanted to fight for Delilah and you gave her that opportunity.

Can you all tell me what is recommended with Lantus when kitties are sick and/or hospitalized? My vet told me not to give it on Thursday, so I didn’t since she was staying overnight for a few days. I’m wondering for future reference whether diabetics need Lantus during a crisis every 12 hours regardless of whether they are eating. Thank you.

There isn't one right answer to your question. In many cases, when a cat is hospitalized they don't give a long-acting insulin like Lantus and instead, they will use a shorter acting insulin. Because the insulin acts rapidly and for a short period, it gives the vet a bit more control over the insulin. A diabetic needs insulin but depending on if the cat is hospitalized, the vet may use a different insulin than what you're using at home. I don't know if you followed Dan's Luna during her episode of DKA. During the time she was in the hospital, the vet used a short acting insulin until she was stabilized.

I am truly sorry for your loss.

My deepest condolences on the loss of your pretty girl. :bighug::bighug:

Take care of you too, this has been an overwhelming time for you.

It's always a super hard decision to make as a person only wants to do what's best for their furbaby, but no one has a crystal ball. Only if the kitties could talk so we would know their wishes too. Your little girl knew you loved her and only wanted the best for her. :bighug:
