Hi guys got my wee cat home tonight from vets. Vet said to feed her twice a day and jab her after she eats. So she ate when she got home, she was very hungry so got her injection done afterwards. She is still looking for food now 4 hours later. She's used to free feeding so will take some adjustment I suppose. Just worried about her. Will I just wait and feed her in the morning now? I'm up early at 630am. Thank you

Yes, free feed, especially during the first half of the cycle. Vetsulin can drop a cat hard and fast during in the first few hours.
Feeding twice daily is old school thinking.
The only time you do not want to feed is the two hours before the shot. You do not want the pretest influenced by food.

Vetsulin information can be found here. Regarding feeding: scroll down to Feeding Schedules + Why Is My Cat So Hungry?

If you could start to set up a signature and a spreadsheet, that would be tremendously helpful. We are fairly data driven.
If you need help setting up the spreadsheet or signature, just holler.

I addressed a few things there that would have been better handled here on Health Forum . My bad!

Important thing is that you are on the right track and Honey is in good hands! :) Keep the questions coming and don't be afraid to feed Honey and give her a little more food than usual if need be to keep her more satisfied because diabetics can't process the food they eat properly so they need more to maintain weight or gain back lost weight.

Welcome to the board, ???? (Sorry, can we have your name? Or did I miss it on the other thread?)
You'll get all the help and advice you need here, so keep asking. We all know it's difficult at first but things do fall into place quite quickly. Try to relax a little and know that you are on the right road to making lovely Honey better!

Hi Ruth (and Honey!), welcome to FDMB. This is a great place for advice and support. :bighug:

It's great that you'll be learning to test Honey's blood glucose at home. Well done for wanting to do that.

In your post you say that Honey was looking for food 4 hours after her shot. ...Newly diagnosed cats are often hungry, because they can't utilize all the nutrients from the food they eat (that's one of the reasons that many of us feed our cats more than twice a day). But it's also 'possible' that Honey's blood glucose had dropped lower 4 hours after the insulin shot, and she was looking for food because of that. ...Once you're hometesting you'll be able to see what her blood glucose is doing, and that makes the diabetes much easier to understand and to manage.

With Caninsulin the lowest blood glucose is 'often' 4 - 4.5 hours after the insulin shot, but in some kitties it can be earlier or later than that. Ruth, you may be interested to see our beginner's guide to Caninsulin here:

Aww thanks so much for the information. I was wondering what level would be considered low. I have so much to learn.
Today I left Honey a little tiny bit of food to eat during the day but still had her two main meals morning and night and she's in good form today. Seems a lot brighter. I gave her the injection at 530pm so watching her now that it is coming up to the hours she may go low. Thanks again. I will check out your links too
