Does Feline Herpes Virus cause high bg?

My cat has had higher bg levels for about a month and a half, and his curves have been higher each week for the past 3 weeks, even as I’ve raised his dose. (Btw, I’m trying to work with my vet, so my curves are AlphaTrak and on a separate spreadsheet.)

It’s just occurred to me that he might be having an FHV outbreak. He’s got a weepy eye and he just sneezed several times in a row.

Anybody have experience with FHV? Can vets do anything, or do you wait it out?

With the caveat that every cat is different (ECID)...

Any inflammation or infection can raise BG. So it's entirely possible that numbers are running a bit higher due to FHV. L-lysine may help. It's a powder you can add to food that helps to strengthen the immune system. FHV can be treated with antibiotics but it's a chronic condition. This is some info on FHV -- at least regarding conjunctivitis.

If I can offer a suggestion... I'm assuming your spreadsheet is up to date. Please always test before giving a shot. Shooting blind will eventually become very scary. Right now, you have no idea what the numbers are on several days and you could be shooting a 35 without knowing it. Testing is the only way to keep Jackson safe.

Where do you get L-Lysine powder and do you think it’s a good thing to add to their food all the time or just when they are sick?

I purchased mine from iHerb -- but it was quite some time ago. I think it depends on whether you think your cat is immune compromised. If it's for something like FHV, it may be good to give it a try for several months and see if the number of flare ups is reduced.

I have a kitty who is immune compromised due to necessary medication. She is on l-lysine full time, to help reduce the incidence of eye ulcers, per her vet. At the animal shelter, we would start every on l-lysine if a sniffly kitty came in, as a preventative. Each situation is different.

You can buy l-lysine at a lot of vitamin shops. I have even bought it an pharmacies and grocery store vitamin aisles. You can get it in capsules, or loose,

There’s a pet brand that makes it in a chew but might not be that great ingredient wise..
