Day 23 2.75 Units Lantus

Good morning........

Last night I used a different syringe called UltiCare. I am presently using UltiCare VetRX syringes and I thought I would try the Human sryinges with a 6mm needle instead of what I am currently using which is an 8mm needle. Anyway, I measured with my caliper to make sure I was giving the CORRECT amount of insulin with this new syringe. I measured and measured and measured....I think you get my drift.... and well Yoyo went unusaully low last night @+2 and showed a 54. Would he have gone this low with his regular syringe or did he get more insulin last night by using the new syringe? I really don't know the answer but I went back to the original syringe this morning. Too tired to think.....I have over thinked this entire situation and have gotten no where!! The only difference that I noticed after measuring and measuring is that the barrel is a little larger with the new syringe so even though I did all that measuring maybe the syringe holds more volume because it is a little larger than the original barrel.
(I don't want to mess with Yoyo's BG levels, so back to the original syringe even though I just ordered two boxes of the human ones....yukk)!

Hope you all have a pleasant day and that all our Kitties surf safely :D:bighug:

It's possible the human version of the syringes holds more insulin, even though it is the same brand. That's why when we switch syringes, we caution people the dose can be different because the diameter of the syringe can be different. I'm glad he surfed safely last night.

You might want to ask @Marje and Gracie - she's had a lot of experience with calipers and various syringes.

Interesting that he went that low after your 'experiment'... I'd probably go back to the safety of my old syringes after a result like that...I'm a big chicken when it comes to making changes like that...why were you unhappy with your original human syringes?

Every time you get a new box of syringes, you need to recalculate for calipers. 1 unit on a syringe might not be same on different box or brand.

Thanks Paula...
I rechecked and recalculated. I think the barrel is wider thus holding more insulin.

I am using ulticare vetrx....they are animal syringes with 8mm needle. I thought perhaps a human syringe maybe more accurate.

So on new syringes you, you measured out what 1 unit was, take that reading and multiplied the amount you are giving and reset calipers to that answer??
With the new syringe I measured a unit on several new syringes with the caliper to see if I got the same number. Then I do the math for Yoyo's dosage.

Just getting back from vet visit with Yoyo. Time to recheck thyroid levels and kidney functions.
I am always nervous upon vets call regarding blood results.
Praying everything is normal:bighug:

Human syringes are not more accurate. Since they are all machine made, they are all going to be inaccurate. Any time you go from one syringe type to another, even made by the same company, you probably will see some kind of variation in the syringe itself whether it be the diameter of the barrel, etc.

Is that the reason he went low? I don’t know. I thought you were using the Ulticare Human syringes before and then switched to the pet ones? Did I remember that incorrectly? If you were using the human ones before and went back to them, then I wouldn’t expect that the syringes were the issue if you used your previous calculations for the human ones.

I see he had a vet visit today. Everything ok?? I bet the vet is really impressed with how great he’s been doing because his mama is so amazing with her handling of his FD!

You are a funny girl.....the vet didn't say one thing to me about his diabetes, NOTHING!! I did check his BG level with my alphatrak2 in the office with a drop of blood from what they had just took from his neck. He was 111 @ +5.5....I thought that was good. The only thing that was said was when she wrote his insulin prescription, she left out the dose and said that I knew what to give him because I know what I am doing:)

I have been using UltiCare VetRX syringes probably since around February 2019 when I had all the issues with the other brand name syringes having access insulin in the hubs. I have been wanting to change to the human UltiCare syringes because they offer a 6mm needle but I have been fearing the outcome.
Since Yo is doing well(anti-jinx) I thought I could change now and any change that I did see in his BG levels would be reflected from the new human syringe. But I didn't expect to see such a low drop. I thought if anything that I was giving him less insulin and his BG levels would raise and then I would adjust if necessary. But the BIG DROP scares me and I went back to his UltiCare VetRX syringes this morning. I measured and measured for hours to get it right. The one thing that I forgot to measure was the barrel. I did that after the fact. I measured that when I saw the 54 @+2.
In my mind I thought that the human syringe maybe is MADE better than the animal one and I like the 6mm needle.

Any suggestions? (And of course I had to purchase 2 more boxes just yesterday in anticipation that this was going to be fine).
I know I can lower the dose, take off a drop say like from 2.75 units to 2.68 units....what do you think? Please let me know what you think...ok?

I took Yo to the vet today for bloodwork. To recheck thyroid levels and kidney levels and amylase levels(pancrease).
He was such a good boy in the car. Just slept in my arms wrapped in a towel. He has never been this good in the car. I guess he is getting used to crazy mama taking him back and forth to the vet. And the vet is not close by:)

I’m glad the vet visit went well and she recognized what a great job you are doing. Paws crossed for great test results.

If you want to use the human syringes, than you should. Yes, you can shave the dose and see how he does. How about shaving it by 0.1u to 2.65u. That will be easier. And I know you will stay on top of the numbers.

We are with you in wanting good blood work results for Yoyo. That is so sweet how he rode so well wrapped up, to the vet's office:cat: Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for results. He loves his mama. He told Tina you have a thing about his ears, but he still loves you very much!
