What do people do when they need to go out of town? My husband is retired so currently we have someone home 98% of time. (Which is great will we try to get Malachi regulated) However, in March, we may be out of the country for 12 days. Do you board? Generally, my friend watches the cats. dogs etc. but she has a horse ranch to run and I love her but I don't believe she will have the time to monitor him the way he needs to be. I may cancel the trip but would like to hear suggestions.

I've used a cat sitter. I've been fortunate in that when I lived in Chicago, I had a vet tech who earned money on the side by cat sitting. When I moved to where I am now, I found a wonderful woman who has a pet sitting business. Check at your vet's office to see if anyone pet sits. If you're willing to post the city where you live, there may be a member here who can recommend someone. We've even had members barter their services -- they care for your kitty if you'll care their theirs when traveling.

If you do have to board him, write out very detailed instructions including that he must be tested before every shot with your meter. I did this when I had to board 2 diabetic cats and brought their own meters. I included the dose information and my "don't shoot" number. Also instructions that the dose could not be changed without talking to me first.

When I picked them up, the first thing I did was review my meters to verify the followed my instructions. They did. :cat:

Thank you. Thats good info to know. I live on a horse ranch and my friend who owns the ranch usually looks after the cats and the dogs. She is experienced in animal care so i am hoping she feels confident in doing the routine. She is pretty busy with all the horses so then i have another friwnd come in every other day or so to play and socialize. Malachi is generally pretty sensitive and is not fond of being boarded so i really want to keep him at home if i can.
