Alysha & D'Argo

Member Since 2019
We are in crisis. D'Argo cried out and I found him in the bathroom lying in his pee unresponsive. Tested the pee and the ketostix says trace. Now I tried to call my vet and they open at 9 am which is 3 and a half hour away. Tried the city emergency vet it opens at 8 am. So I've given a full dose of the Buprenorphine the vet gave last week and D'Argo still tried to pull away. Not sure if I should laugh or cry so I'm doing both right now. A city of 1 million people and we have no 24 hour emergency vet He's just lying here with his eyes half opened and slightly labored breathing. So scared for him right now.

His appetite has been off and he hasn't been eating much and for the last 24 hours all I could do was get him to lick the gravy off the Friskies shreds. So no insulin for 48 hours.

If you haven’t given any insulin for 48 hours and he hasn’t eaten much for 24 hours and has a trace of ketones I would get him to the vet as soon as possible as he could have the beginnings of ketoacidosis which is a very serious illness.

In the meantime try and get him to eat something and also drink some water.

How many hours til the vet opens?

Ketones are caused by not enough insulin and not enough food and an infection or other stress. Can you test his blood sugar now? Also, I would try to get another ketone test as soon as possible. Check him for hydration.

I would Google for an emergency vet. I can't imagine there isn't a 24 hour clinic somewhere. What's the point of an emergency clinic if they aren't available 24/7? In Chicago, some of the emergency practices were open overnight and not during the day.

I would get your kitty to the ER as soon as you can.

He still fights me if I try to syringe feed him. He actually starts gaging when he sees the syringe. And we have a 3 hour wait for the vet. I have called and left a message but for now we wait. Also I did find an emergency vet opened 24 hour on the other side of the city. Waiting for my vet will take just as much time.

Have you checked his BG? Will your regular vet see him first thing when they open? If not, I would take him to the ER where they may have IM or more specialized doctors available and more equipment. How is he acting? Maybe he would eat some all meat baby food or lick some human tuna (in water, not oil) juice.

Right now he's just lying here. I'm managing to get a bit of water into him. And we'll be at the vets office as soon as it opens.

Why do things always have to happen when vets are closed, hang in there and I'm praying he will be OK and the hour passes quickly. Please let us know after the vet visit

Vet visit did not have any answers. I decided to put him out of his pain and put him to sleep. Hardest decision I've ever had to make. Thank you very one for your support and advice.

I'm so sorry for your loss of your sweet kitty. He knows how much you love him, and will be waiting for you at The Bridge. Fly free, happy and healthy again D'Argocat_wings>o.

Alysha, so very sorry for your loss. You made the most difficult decision out of love and D'Argo knows that. Peace and comfort in the days to come, dear heart. :bighug::bighug:
