? Are the less expensive ketone blood test kits just as good as the expensive Precision Xtra?

Hi, so Ive had Mimi on 1.25 for a few days now- Im wondering if someone can look at my SS and tell me if I should adjust the insulin at all. I also don't even know how accurate 1.25 is measured- I must pull the plunger down and up several times because drawing from the Lantus solostar pen- there are so many bubbles?? I try my best to not get any bubbles but if there is a tiny one, does that affect how much the dose actually is? (does the bubble count as space, so if its 1.25 and theres a little bubble its really 1 unit, or something.

thanks

We don't adjust the dose based on preshot numbers, but rather the nadirs or low points. You haven't been able to get any mid cycle tests lately. Is it possible to get a test before you got to bed tonight? We need to know how low she is going on this dose.

Yes! And tomorrow I’ll try and do a nadir test! I’ll get a test in about a half hour (right before I go to bed)

Hi Rosa,
I agree with Wendy, you need to be getting some tests in during the cycle if you can.
Is there any time during the day cycle that you are at home when you could get some tests in?
Even getting a +10 in the pm cycle when you get up in the morning is good data.

How is Mimi's appetite now?
It's great to see you have the timed feeder and using it during the cycle.

With the bubbles problem......when you are drawing up the insulin.....try pushing the plunger on the syringe right in and hold it in until you have inserted the insulin bottle. Then draw up the insulin. Hopefully there won't be as many bubbles.

I'd also suggest that you read over the dosing methods -- either Tight Regulation or Start Low Go Slow. This will give you a better idea of when dose changes are typically made based. on the strategy you're using.

You also need to be testing for ketones as often as you can if you are testing for urinary ketones. Otherwise, please consider getting a blood ketone meter. While we use the dosing methods linked above, we are very attentive to dose-related issues with a cat that has recently been diagnosed with DKA.

I tested her ketones in urine tonight- I caught some in a large spoon and tested it a few times...
I don't think the colors could be that similar and usually my vision is pretty good at seeing differences but it looks like there are no ketones. it faintly looks like trace, so I tested mine and my reading looks almost the same. I think I need a blood test one so I stop driving myself nuts over this.
Would "trace" be pretty obvious? Also, can someone recommend a blood meter tester? Ive updated the numbers just now. Mimi is still acting totally normal and cute

Great job with the ketone testing!!

The two ketone meters that I've seen people use are the Precision Xtra and NovoMax. If you want more recommendations, if you change the subject line in your first post in the thread, you and ask for advise re. a ketone meter.

I looked up the Precision Xtra- I think its saying that it tests for ketones as well as blood glucose?

Many of the ketone meters will test both blood glucose and blood ketones. However, the strips are expensive so most people only use the meters for ketones due to the cost of the strips.

Rosa, I always had the same problem with wondering if the ketone test said negative or trace. Many people comment on the same thing. Well done getting the ketone tests!
