Skipped insulin because of his dental. I just dropped him off. He looked at me like, “um mom where are you going?” I cried in the car. They will call to update me.

Hi everyone,

The vet tech called and they are going to start the procedure. :arghh: He is under anesthesia (I wish I was).

His BG before the test was 527. Yikes. I'm sure he's stressed and no insulin this am. Maybe I should've given him a little. Oh well. She said it's best he's high and not low.

She said they would call when he wakes up.

Thank you for the good energy! :bighug:

Any word on X-ray results yet? Sending tons of vines for Yoshi and :bighug: for you. Dentals as so hard on pet parents.
No word. They only said they would call during the procedure if something strayed from the estimate. She quoted 2 extractions on the low end (the teeth were visibly bad) and 4 on the high end. I am assuming the xrays fell within that range or under....

She just called with the x-ray results. He needs three extractions. Apparently his molars on the bottom. It’s so funny because when she did the physical exam it looked like his top back tooth was bad but I guess it was just dirty. I asked her about it and she said all the x-rays showed were that he needed three extractions but she would call if anything else came up.

I hope all three aren’t on the same side. I hope the poor thing will be able to chew

Awwww...you poor thing...:bighug::bighug: I'm sending virtual hugs because I remember that feeling ... it's like someone has kicked you right square in the middle of your stomach...you try to stay busy..and they'll take care of little Yoshi!

Please keep us updated...and I hope it won't be too much longer before they'll let you come back and pick him up. The last dental Luci had we sat out in the waiting room FOREVER. They were busy with something or another...I was aggravated about that. They said 'be here at 5' I was there on time...waiting and waiting. I barely made it home in time for her PM test/shot!

I exactly feel 100% like someone kicked me in the stomach. I just bought Tums.

BREATHE and BREATHE again. They will take care of him.

I had a civvie I took for a cleaning, had 7 extractions. This was long before I knew importance of dentals. And having xrays before. She ate as soon as she got home.

Another (my kibble addict) we knew needed one extraction because it looked like the tooth had a hole through it. She had 3 extractions but not that one tooth, it was just a stain. She ate right away and dry food.

When Ollie was done, no extractions, they just said glucose was high. I didn't ask how high, I don't remember what is was when we got home but it wasn't an unusual reading for her. I just kept to insulin time, knowing the high glucose and pain would make it okay to shoot normal dose whether she ate or not. She just picked at her food that day and next day.

Sending you tons of peace, trust, and knowledge that we know very much how you are feeling. All six of my cats have had dentals in the last 2 years, with some extractions, and every time I was tied in knots until I got the call that they were awake. He will do fine missing a few teeth, even if all in the same area. Two cats I adopted had awful gum disease, and today have about half their teeth. They eat just fine!!

Thank you for your examples. You guys are making me feel much better.

I was going to ask...If he doesn't eat much, should I still shoot? I am assuming his numbers will be SUPER high when we get home.

I just talked to the vet tech. He is in recovery and still really out of it. She said his ears perked up while she was talking to me. :arghh:

I asked her if she was in the room, and she said yes. I wanted to know if the teeth were really bad and giving him pain. She didn't really answer if they were bad or not, but she said it was a good idea to take them out because they could contribute to a lot of other things and get in the blood etc... she also said she didn't know if it would help regulate him etc...

I don't know. I'm feeling kind of down. She said he'd be recovering for a couple of weeks and I just want this all to be worth it for him. I would hate to have him go through all of this recovery pain in vain. I kind of wanted her to say, "OMG the teeth were so bad he was in so much pain", and she didn't. I'm so emotional today.

I get to pick him up at 5:30. 2.5 hours. She is sending me home with pain meds.

I guess I will wait a couple weeks until he heals and if his numbers don't go down, I may have to switch insulin. I wonder if I should have tried that before the dental.

The vet isn't usually going to make any promises. Sometimes they are even evasive, but it's often because they just don't know.
Yes, I believe it was a good idea to take them out. I would trust your vet with that. The mouth being healthy protects the whole body.
I can completely understand being emotional. Think - one step forward in Yoshi's overall care:cat:

You just treat him like a little prince when he comes home and tell him how much you love him;)

Start from now. The plan to wait a couple weeks, and reconsider insulin type sounds like a good one, unless you are advised to wait a little longer from someone more experienced than I am.

I told my students I was taking tomorrow off to stare at my cat. I can’t wait to love on him.

The vet just called (the tech called earlier).

She said the bottoms were pretty bad and that the gum was receding from the teeth. She also said there was a small tooth that she basically flicked out. That the roots were gone and decayed and it was basically just hanging there.

So I feel better that I did this.

She checked BG after surgery and it read HI on the meter. She wanted me to run over and give insulin and keep him a few more hours until pick up time. That would’ve messed up our shot time in a big way so I just told her I’d pick him up at 530. I wonder if I should give insulin when we get home (about 6) or if I can wait till shot time (7:30).

She was actually really nice to me. I apologized for being a pain, and she said that she could’ve handheld some things better and thanked me for sticking with her.

So 4 were removed. One by flicking and 3 by extraction

7:30 is fine. You will be on schedule, and you will have had some time to see if Yoshi will eat. Both of you will have had a chance to sit down, and go 'phew.' Also, some cats drop lower after a vet appointment/procedure. Take a test or two, just so that you know what the BG does after such an event. It is always good to take a couple of readings after a vet visit.

I am glad the procedure is over. :bighug: He will feel better without those bad teeth in there. The choice of shot time is up to you, since you skipped this morning. I would test as soon as he gets home, then again at PMPS, so you know if he is dropping a lot. Try him on just a couple tsp of soft mushy cat food or baby food, to make sure he will eat. Space out feedings so he doesn’t get GI upset. Since he is high now, giving insulin will probably be Ok.

After a couple weeks, if you don’t see improvement, I don’t think the problem will be the insulin, but rather the dose. A cat needs however much insulin they need. But that is jumping ahead of things. He will be higher the next few days due to this morning’s skip and the inflammation from extraction. Don’t worry, he will get over that.

Well, we are back.

I expected a docile Yoshi when the vet assistant brought him to me but he didn’t acknowledge me and wanted out of his carrier bad.

On the way home he literally busted through the netting of the zipper pocket compartment.

I took him out at home and he peed himself and on me (I deserve it). He’s walking funny and sitting in front of his water bowl. He’s drinking (not a ton) and he had some baby food. I’m going to test in 10 and give insulin a half hour early.

He’s completely out of it and confused and acting drunk. The vet said the shot they gave could make him wonky and hyperactive. He’s all over the place.

I will update when I test.

I hope by now you are both home having a love-in! I was unable to check in today, but I was thinking of you & Yoshi! So glad it all went well.
I'll let you know how it goes with Phoebe Squeak tomorrow. :bighug:
Hi my sister in dental, I don’t know if your little one needs extractions, but have some baby food on hand. Find out what pain meds they gave phoebe before and after as some can make them all kinds of wonky.

I took tomo off. I don’t know if you can take off Friday. I debated it, but I’m glad I did. ECID but Yoshi is a special kind of drive mom crazy.... Good luck to you both. Please update us

Oh, my!

If he's that out of it, it might be good to keep him confined in one room for a little while, so he can't hurt himself with klutziness. Definitely keep him away from stairs, if nothing else.

It will fade soon, don't worry. If he wants to eat, that may help. And definitely test asap, just in case.

So glad he's home!

The vet told me to keep him in a room and away from his brother. I guess he gave them trouble: “he puffed up” during the catheter and “wasn’t having it” and the younger vet techs got scared. Said he was hard to sedate. She said he was still coming out of anesthesia.

His brother just wants to love on him more than I do. I don’t think I can confine him. I might. I want to give him water and Insulin and see

You did wonderful today :) and it’s great that Yoshi is eating!!

How long after his surgery did you bring him home?

I’ve see some kitties recover from dentals and they’re all very different. Some would be absolute love bugs the first 2-3 hours after recovery and then become grouchy, growly and upset afterwards. A cat earlier in the day that was pure joy to work with, might turn into a caution afterwards. It’s not their fault. They’re in a strange place pumped with drugs and in a bit of pain. But they’ll get over it :)

I do really think the dental will help with his diabetes. Inflammation and pain will raise BG in most cases. Plus he’ll feel way better!

Thank you so much! He had surgery at noon. I picked him up at 530.

I just gave him a tiny bath because he peed himself and I thought that contributed to his limping. He’s sitting in front of the water bowl and growling at me when I go near him. I need to leave him be for a bit.

I don’t like how he’s walking. It’s how he was the first time he was diagnosed, but thankfully I have zobaline (helped him immensely the last time). I don’t know if he’s wonky from meds or if neuropathy is back.

Oh yes, that I hope someone can shed some insight about. If you’re concerned, I’d call your vet tomorrow just to double check what’s up with that.

He’s definalu

I will. I think it’s from high blood sugar all this time and I think it might be neuropathy. Unless he side kicked the vet and threw his leg out. I’m so tired.

It could be the buprenorphine dose was too high. It is doses in a range based on weight. Vets will often dose a little high to get ahead of pain. One of my civvies walked like a drunken sailor until his bupe dose wore off.

yesterday’s post mentioned a buprenorphine shot.
I was concerned about the possibility of mirtz being given. It would have explained some of the behaviour.

Something strange just happened. I did a + 3 and he was at 179. I waited 20 min and he was at 390. I tried the human meter but got an error message which I looked up and not enough blood.

He’s acting like he’s having some sort of out of body experience. He wanders off mentally.. stares at fake cats in the sky...wants to be by his water, but won’t drink much. The limping is subsiding but not much.

He’s not really himself it’s weird. He’s okay, but he’s completely drugged. Still. And they gave it to him exactly 12 hours ago

Bupe can make them act really weird and off. And an anesthesia is not a small thing so I would guess it’s all to be expected? He is eating so that’s good. What’s his number now?
