10/7 Tucker 12 AMPS 72, +3 79, +4 88, +9 49, PMPS 90

Things are going well at his 0.25u. We are on our 5th cycle so far at this dose, and he has shifted from blues to greens after yesterdays AM dose. I have to be gone all afternoon, so I am getting a +4 here shortly. I don't want to carb him up too much, but sometimes he drops after +4, so I will have to decide what I feel comfortable with.

He is needing his rabies shot (he does occasionally go(escape) outside, and we have had more than one case of rabies in the area in skunks, coons etc). I am worried about the effect on his progress with his diabetes...I searched and have seen mixed opinions on whether the stress of vaccines can affect diabetic control. Will have to think more about when to get it done. Has anyone here had any issues with it messing up BG control beyond the stress of a vet visit?

I don’t know specifically about the rabies vaccine in a sugar cat, but I think pretty much any vaccine can cause an immune response that can affect a body in numerous ways. There’s a risk, I would think, that it could cause some inflammation and stress and increase blood sugar based on that. I hope you get a real answer to your question!

I've heard some conflicting stories about rabies...some people with strictly indoor cats refuse to allow their cats to get it - however...I tend to buy insurance...so I'd rather take the chance on a vaccination against rabies, than to take a chance on her getting it - from heaven only knows where...or should she get outside which she has, on occasion...against all previous plans and wishes of mine - made it to the great outdoors...then the risk is very real! I'm not willing to take that chance.

Bubba goes outside each day. I do not do any more vaccines. I believe they are just too harsh on our cats and especially ones with immune systems all ready comprised from diabetes.

My belief is that they are over done and most kitties and doggies for that matter do t need any more beyond the booster that they received ( their second shot).

You can have titers done ( bloodwork ) to see if the antibodies are still present protecting your cat. I have done that in the past for distemper and yep, antibodies still there.

Ask your vet to do a titer. The titer is more expensive than the vaccine but a heck of a lot cheaper than getting cancer from being over vaccinated.

Look up Dr. Ron Schultz, a veterinary immunologist. He has very strong opinions against over vaccinating.

@Bobbie And Bubba , my understanding is that not all of the rabies vaccines available cause sarcoma? At least one of the 3 year ones don’t use the same adjuvant, yeah?

My understanding is the 3 year Merial without the adjuvant is safer than the yearly one. As far as whether it can cause sarcoma , I don’t know. I think I would ask for a titer from the vet to know if Tucker still is covered by his last one.

Came home, +9 just for fun, at 49 (repeated the test too, a bit of variation second time was 52) I am suspicious he dropped after I got that +4. I thought we were safe since he was at 88 then. Not sure what I will shoot tonight. Probably assume he earned a reduction and go to a 0.1. Fed him his usual LC supper and about 2 tsp MC.

Good info to know re: vaccines and sarcomas. He last had his rabies shot about 6 years ago... I will ask the vet about doing a titre instead of automatically vaccinating. I know our clinic uses the 3 year vaccine, but if we can check titres first that would make sense to do.

The titers are a good idea. You are lucky your clinic does three year vaccines. At least several years ago when I checked into it, it was hard to find around here.

Thanks! I am not sure what I ended up reducing to. I tried to mimic the fine dosing tutorial, but I think what I was drawing up as 0.25 might have been closer to 0.1 or like a 0.15 lol. I am just now lining the plunger up to barely touch the zero line, and it spit out 2 drops when I did it a few times, so I guess that is what I will call our current dose.
