I did! The green was short lived last night because my sister fed him honey... too much and he probably also bounced majorly. I was out with friends so she was in charge.

I noticed this morning that the base of Ming's tail was shedding big chunks of fur! They also felt slightly greasy. Could it be from the weather? I also google'd and saw it could be effects of detoxing while transitioning to raw? But that sounded like it usually happened to cats who were on kibble previously and Ming was on canned with some raw here and there.

I'm not familiar with that - but perhaps some other members here could comment. Once you get back at the helm I'm sure he'll come down...and regain his fur when he settles on the new diet. Are you adding the supplements (taurine, etc.) that the raw?

I would think that it's more related to some skin condition, a parasite, fleas, or something like that? I never heard of detoxification when transitioning to raw, but I am not an expert. Macka got a nicer fur with raw food!

I've never heard of the weather causing hair loss ,especially on his tail. Is he biting at his tail? Does he go outside?

My cat Ravan had an attack of Pancreatitis a year ago. My vet suggested Steroids & I refused. I think the attack was caused by giving him shrimp that I cooked in butter. Fats can affect the Pancreas.

I've been giving him a pinch of Curcumin in Organic baby food & he's fine. No more Pancreatitis! Turmeric/Curcumin is for inflamation. I'm 73 yrs old & do not take any Pharmaceuticals! I do take Curcumin 2 times a day & feel Great!

I'm glad you are weaning him off Steroids.

Ming is a young cat. He can live many more Healthy years. My last Kitty ,Daisy, lived to be 24 & died peacefully while we were taking a nap together.I've had several cats live into their 20's. Our animals are living longer just like people!

This recipe doesn’t call for supplements but I’m pretty confident it probably isn’t needed. I did order some premix and will make a batch with supplements too.

Ming still eats a few cans here and there so I’m not 100% scared he’s not balanced.

My coworker who recommended the FB group and the recipe, has been feeding the same recipe for her whole cats’ lives and she told me she went through the same dilemma between supplements and no supplements.

Wow!!!!! 24!! I hope Ming lives that long too

He does go outside but isn’t scratching or anything. Seems really good and has his normal big appetite.

If so, this is not nutritionally complete and can cause all sorts of health problems. You need to use a pre-mix or purchase all of the necessary supplements. I use EZ Complete from FoodFurLife with Gizmo's raw food.

It’s considered a balanced meal and the group doesn’t believe in supplements. The recipe is 80% muscle meat, 10% organ, 10% bone. The only things they add is whole raw eggs and sardines.

I am concerned and also not really because the group does a lot research and can account for a lot of the supplements needed in what we’re giving. But I have bought the premixes. Just waiting for it in the mail. He still gets his 1-2 cans of FF. I’ll probably try him on premix and see what happens.

Hm ok. I'll keep a close eye on Ming.

I was thinking about it more as the day went on. Can pred cause hair loss? I know it causes hunger and made Ming's fur grow really slowly. I did notice that after switching to liquid compounded pred, Ming's fur grew back really quickly. He had a ultrasound shave that didn't grow back in since October 2018. It grew back somewhere in July. My coworker also felt that the fur on his back felt thin and coarse on July 17 (when he went to the vet to get his Libre fitted). I had noticed before that that his fur was feeling shabby.

Then we restarted him on pred tablets on September 4th. His fur lately feels fine and soft - definitely better than back in July. I can't remember when the shedding started.

We started him on homemade raw on August 16. I would say 5/6 to 4/6 meals is the raw and the other 1-2 meals is his normal FF canned.

Anyway, maybe I'm overthinking it... His fur doesn't look bad. He's just shedding a lot and it just coincides with so many things like the weather, the food change, and the pred. He gets Revolution every month so I'm not concerned about fleas to answer @Penelope and Mačka 's post.

I do very much appreciate everyone's responses so far! I've posted once or twice on those FB groups and really, nothing beats the care and dedication of everyone here at FDMB.

Can pred cause hair loss?

Actually, yes. Macka was on Pred when he was first diagnosed with asthma (14 years ago), and he started balding, but it was evenly dispatched on his body. I stopped giving him Pred when I realized these side effects (among others).
