Churchill's Mother
Member Since 2019
My four-year old Ragamuffin Churchill was diagnosed in February this year and was never truly stable until June when I changed his vet and diet. He was not overweight and the diagnosis was a shock. It is horrible for all of us and the thought of the needles and testing was hard. He was put on Lantus and I really don't think our vet was realistic about his care.
I took information from this site to refute their treatment suggestions like keeping him on dry Royal Canin Diabetic food (carbs are far too high) and asked them to look at the research. They dismissed this site and basically everything on here. I took him to a new vet who said, yes, Church needed to get on a wet only diety and suggested I go with the Fancy Feast pates. Within six days he was not excessively drinking or peeing. We cut his insulin in half and again two weeks later by another half. He is insulin free now.
I am angry with myself for listening to my old vet and feeling shamed into following their direction. I wasted time and my baby was uncomfortable for too long. My new vet explained that the ex-vet had old information and although she was not disparaging, also seemed frustrated that they still push their own food. We are very happy and feeling optimistic about going forward. Now I just need to solve the urinary crystals in my other cat and I will be dancing on air!
For anyone who is still struggling with diet issues, please listen to this group and read the dietary section carefully. The information was put together with great intention and care. I thank all of you and am glad that we have a forum to help each other while we care for our little loves!
