Cat food quality?

Hi there, I have two non-diabetic cats. For fear of diabetes like my old cats, we only feed them low carb fancy feasts although they also get a little dry food as topping and some temptations treats. However recently one of them developed a rodent ulcer and the vet had us transition them to veterinary kangaroo food only in case this was food allergy.

So its been a week (note the ulcer hasn’t gone down) but the big thing we have noticed in BOTH cats is a big increase in their energy levels.. they are running around like crazy.. way more energy than I have seen them have in years.

I am guessing its because the kangaroo is a better quality food. But its also 4X the cost of fancy feast. So i have questions.. is this energy level change really the food? If so, what other foods can we use that are better quality than FF, but less expensive and still low carb?

Love to hear your thoughts on this

Here are some foods that are low carb. I got these suggestions from a member in my feline kidney disease group on Facebook. Mine has ckd as well as diabetes so they’re appropriate for both.

Getting rid of high carb temptations and dry food is a good start. I fed raw food, which if you make your own can be cheaper than most canned. Koha makes several options with kangaroo in them, and other novel proteins. Rawz, Canada Fresh, Natures Variety Instinct are other options in Canada.

And yes, energy level could be food related. Good luck with the kitties.

I give my kitty a few temptations treats as a meal topper (only 2-5 per day). Is that too much? She doesn’t like the freeze dried chicken bites.

If the ulcer is caused by food it can take a few weeks for it to go away. Feed only the kangaroo and if it works stick with it for at least two months. One of mine three year olds developed EGC which is similar and I made the mistake of going back to other proteins too soon and she then reacted to all proteins I gave her. I’ve had her on duck for over a year and am afraid to try another protein for fear I’ll run out of novel proteins for her. Read labels carefully because so many cans include more than one protein even though the label might name only one when you do change foods. Good luck.

What food items you are giving them?
I’m feeding her only raw, Primal and Small Batch. Her sister doesn’t have the problem so I mix up get proteins to hopefully avoid this with her. My problem baby gets only duck. My vet says in two years it may come back. I hope he’s wrong.

After two months of kangaroo you can try adding back another protein to see if it’s the culprit. I did that too soon and ruined for het chicken, pork, beef, and turkey. I suspect her issues were with turkey and chicken as that’s what I fed for nearly a year.
