9/1/19-Blaze AMPS 303, +2.5 261, +4 283, +6 231, +9 224, PMPS 284, +2 381

Ya, he seems more active at night. Which is typical right? Going lower during the night time cycle?

Hi Sarah, Take a look at some the other SS's - at first they're kinda all over the road - the thing is, we never really know when they're going to take that turn and head down to the lagoon...I mean there are some clues - like a flat yellow day can often mean a nice active cycle is impending...but for today it doesn't look like he's had enough insulin to kick-start that just yet.

Try to be patient...catch a test...just to see where he's at. You're probably safe now without too much poking until PMPS...if you need to take a break.

@Sue and Luci

Okie dokie, I will hold off any more tests until PMPS, after I grab the +6 test, just to see where he’s at. Would be nice to give Blaze a little break, he’s sun bathing in the window right now :cat:

Thanks Luci! I was just reading the stickie on how to use food to manipulate the curve. It says to start with feeding at pre-shot, and then snacks at +1, +2, and +3. Does that sound good to start with this week?

Trying to look at lots of SS, it’s just a little confusing to me because I started with Novolin for the first two weeks, and they work so differently, so I feel like I’m learning all over again.

This is Sue - doing the typing :) Luci is off lounging somewhere - she hasn't learned to use the computer - yet.

I only feed at 'pre-shot' when I see that she's going into a shot time with a low number - with Luci typically always being higher at AM and PM pre-shot times, I don't feed her until I get that number. At this point, I think it's a little early considering his AM and PM readings to worry about pre-shot feeding.

Snacks are given at most test times in this household - I want her to surf, not dive and I've had a tough time convincing her that is how she's supposed to do this whole thing. Keeping blood glucose more level seems to be helped by eating frequent small meals - I'm not a proponent of twice a day feedings...I think of a human as a diabetic - they're told to eat frequent, small meals - helps keep the BG level.

Oh my gosh, I meant Sue! I was just reading Luci’s spreadsheet and her name must have been in my head when I was typing! :D

So you don’t feed Luci breakfast or dinner after her ‘pre-shot’ test until she hits a certain number? I can’t really stall breakfast or dinner with my work schedule and I don’t want to get off his shot schedule either. I’m going to have to stay with pre-shot test at 5 am/5 pm, feed him and give shot if he isn’t under 150 (which he hasn’t been yet).

When I work Monday through Thursday, I don’t get mid cycle tests unless I can make it home on my lunch, so I leave snacks in the timed feeder to help keep his BG level while I’m not home. Same thing during the night when I go to bed.

everyone does is differently just as every cat is different -- LOL -- and a lot of it has to do with how YOUR cat responds

Catcat gets at least a snack -- a couple of tablespoons -- with about half again as much water because he needs to lick his food, not gulp it -- every time I test -- trying to test him without his nose in the food bowl, is a disaster

then at shot time (as soon as his test shows it's time to shoot) he gets a fairly substantial meal -- say, half of a 5.5 oz can or most of a FF can -- because I know with him, the insulin will start kicking in about 2 hours later, and so will the food spike as it digests and hits his bloodstream

I add the extra virgin olive oil and the probiotic powder with that

he'll get a snack at next test, usually +2 or +3, and he'll get a treat and usually another tablespoon of food on top of the test snack

a couple of hours after that is usually when I test to see if he's at nadir or near it .. snack then, plus a little extra food to carry him over if the nadir is later on that day, can't always tell with him, it's not as regular as it is for some cats .. can be as early as +3.5 or as late as +6.5

at +9 or +10 I may test, I may not, depends on if I've checked earlier or if I think he's gone higher, that test gets a minimum snack because I want to see what PMPS is like with no food influence -- sometimes he has a lower test then than his "nadir" earlier on

evening shot time, same as morning

+3 evening or thereabouts, he gets a bigger meal than at +3 morning, because it has to last him all night -- I leave enough in the can so if I wake up during the night, I can give him a snack then without having to think about it

As you can see Luci has rarely been in that category - she typically has a curve - unfortunately starting in the higher numbers - pink or yellow...then tend to slide down as the day progresses ... and then right back up at the end of the day - rinse, repeat...today I was lucky enough to have the honor of shooting a blue number on both ends! Woo hooo!!!

If she's really low - I mean really low - we're supposed to stall by 20 minutes with no food - wait, test, if they're coming up, decide next steps - it's based on the protocol you're following.

If you're locked into 5 am and 5 pm, then I'd suggest getting up before that time to allow you to get a 11+test - just to see where he's at. It's difficult to be locked in to an exact time - but I'm sure you'll do your best :)

I get up at 5 am Monday through Thursday for work, I start work at different times every day, I work at two different dental offices with different start times each day:
Monday I have to be to work at 6:30 am
Tuesday 7:30 am
Wednesday 8 am
Thursday 7 am
So I've started to get up at 5 am every day to be consistent with Blaze's test, feed, shoot times, especially now that he's on Lantus and needs his shots every 12 hours. It takes me about 20-25 minutes to get to work so I have a tiny bit of wiggle room on most work day mornings to stall if needed and re-test, but I could probably only stall food once, before I would need to leave for work.

I thought with Lantus, you want to be locked into a time?

Awwwww...they're so cute! Love that they get along so beautifully! :)
I have three kitties and they all get along so well. I adopted Blaze and his civvie brother, Tunchi, when Blaze was 6 months old and Tunchi was 3 months old, they've grown up together for the last 7 and 1/2 years. THEN DH found an abandoned 3 month old long haired tabby girl three years ago, and that's where Mitzy came into the picture. They all get along and love each other :cat:

Yes, it's best to stick to a consistent shot time if you can. I didn't realize you have flex hours so you're already getting up early enough to have some time with Blaze if needed... I hope it all goes smoothing :) If your back gets up against the wall, have plenty of high and medium carb food on hand; an automatic feeder is a godsend for those occasions - you can freeze the wet FF in ice cube trays and put that into the slots that open later in the day...usually plenty of food will prevent any dipping too low while you're working.

Ya, it makes it a little harder for me on work days since I have different hours every day  Monday would be the hardest for me since I have to be to work at 6:30 am, I have to leave no later than 6:10 to be to work on time. The rest of the week is a little easier, I have more time in the mornings between the time I get up and have to leave for work. I have stocked up MC and HC food and I have the Petsafe 5 automatic feeder, so I leave snacks in there to be available throughout the day while I'm gone. I try my best to come home on my lunch to get a test in, but it doesn't always work out. I'm trying my best!
