Hello all,
I havent had to post in a while.... Thank goodness. However my boy Christopher has gained 2 lbs in the last year. He steals food from his siblings. I am going to feed him in another room begining tomorrow however since he has been OTJ for over a year I have forgotten when I should be worried. His BG has been around 90-120 for a year but tonight when I tested it was 189! It was 2.5 - 3 hours after eating. When after eating will it be the most and at what point should I begin to worry about needing to give insulin again.

ALSO.....is there a diet canned cat food that you all could recommend? Or should I keep feeding him Fancy Feast Pate since he seems to like it and has tolerated it so far.

Thanks

I'd keep him on the Fancy Feast and just decrease the amount of food he's getting. Increasing his exercise will help too (it will also help lower his glucose...exercise is good for diabetics!)

Keep testing for a few days and see what happens. Lots of things can cause a cat's glucose to rise other than losing remission.

I agree. Also test before he eats. Then you know the reading was not influenced by food.

OK.... today I tested before food.... JUST now... and it wan 238! Guessing he is out of remission. Should I wait to give insulin until I know he is over 200 for a week or so?? thanks

Hi Christine, it will very helpful for advising members if you would create a signature and set up a spreadsheet so they can see all the pertinent information, even if you are off line.

1. Setting up your signature (light grey text under a post). Here's how:
click on your name in the upper right corner of this page
click on "signature" in the menu that drops down
type the following in the box that opens: kitty's name/age/date of diabetes diagnosis/insulin you're using and dosage amount /glucose meter you're using/what (s)he eats/any other meds or health issues (s)he has. You can add your name, and a geographic location (sometimes the country/time zone matters) Be sure to SAVE when you are finished.
2. Set up a spreadsheet like the one we use here. You will see how the trends and patterns emerge, and members can review his/her progress before offering suggestions or advice:
