? Trey's AMPS 90 skip or wait an hour

Trey's Mom

Member Since 2019
I was thinking of waiting an hour & retest & give the shot if higher. But if bg is still in the Green should I skip it? He hadn't eaten since 1:00 a.m. when I tested at 7:00. He is a multiple times a day eater, wet food only.
I understand how the insulin works but don't understand how the numbers can be so drastically different in a 24 hour period. Would increasing the insulin by .25 affect the numbers curve? He's at 1 unit now.
Thank you. Still new at this.

What was last nights PMPS and dose?

Stall and retest

I retested Trey 1 hour after the AMPS reading & it went from 90 to 135. I probably should skip the shot this morning ???

the DKA was when Trey was first diagnosed at the vet. He is fine now.
Caregivers of kitties with s history of DKA must be vigilant. Are you testing his urine or blood for the presence of ketones ?
Did He lose weight during his illness? If so has he regained it? How is his appetite?

Yes I use dynastix to test. Glucose @500, keytones - negative. Lost about 2 pounds due to pancreatitis & diabetes. Eating well now. I just got a scale to weigh at home. Waiting for him to wake up to weigh.

Please keep the ss updated and current with all test results and dose amounts.

glad you are checking for ketones. Please also note those test times and results on the ss.

It’s very important to find a dose that you can safely shoot consistently every 12 hours, particularly for a kitty with a recent history of DKA.

The recipe for ketone formation is:
Not enough calories + not enough insulin + infection/inflammation or some other systemic stress.

The body needs insulin to convert food to energy and deliver that energy to the cells. The way DKA happens is that when there is not enough energy from food making it into the cells, the body will breakdown it’s fat and protein to try and fulfill the need for more metabolic energy. The excessive breakdown of these stored reserves creates a toxic by-product - ketones. As ketones build up in the blood stream, the resulting pH and electrolyte imbalances can very quickly develop to life threatening levels , a state of DKA.
