Low bg no lantus for days?

Hi! My kitty morton just got diagnosed with diabetes 2 weeks ago. He was on pred and cyclosporine all his 1 year of life to control his ITP disease. He is off those now for over a week. He fell into dka, sepsis, potassium so low it wouldn't register, and pancreatitis! His bg sat over 400 and even IM insulin wouldnt bring it down for several days. It seems all his infections are completely gone but now off lantus for 5 days (he had 0.5 unit once per night) his bg is 50 today. It was 60 yesterday. He came home for a couple days a few days ago after being discharged from all this crap and he wouldnt eat and had diarrhea from antibiotics reactions. So he has been back at the icu for 2 days and his bg sitting at 50 to 60 no insulin and eating well and has sugars in the fluid bag. Because its 50 they want to keep him...AGAIN. he is acting perfectly fine. Not sure what to do at this point. I have a glucometer at home and everything and his lantus if he needs it but they don't want him to go home until he can manage a bg of 80 on the alpha track without sugars in his fluid bag. I'm kind of stumped what to do

Remind me, I know that he isn't taking Clavamox any longer, but is he on any antibiotics right now? HOpefully others will chime in!

Batrel (spell?) And metronidazole. You know last time he was on metro for diarrhea he was a bottomless pit and so so thirsty.no one thought that was weird but I had to stop him from being on it because he wanted water and food so bad and he peed like 20 times a day! This time he isnt though
 
Baytril and metronidazole (AKA Flagyl). Got it. Metronidazole also has an anti-inflammatory effect in the intestinal tract, so that is good too.
 
The only condition I have ever heard of that could cause low BG in the absence of insulin is an insulinoma. I don't know much about them, except that they are really rare, and I think he'd probably be crashing if he had one? And his BG is lower than what we consider normal, but not totally outside the range we've seen here for non-diabetic kitties. I think we've even had one or two that liked to hang out in the 30's (human meter), which is probably lower than the 50 on the vet meter.

Of course, Morton has a lot of health issues going on, so he's not a simple case. Perhaps the vets have something else in mind that requires close monitoring, I am not a vet and can't really say. Still, if it were me, I agree with Sandi, I'd rather have him home, assuming the vets don't clarify that they have a reason other than "this number seems low to us".

I hope that either his numbers rise some, or that they figure out what is going on, soon! So glad he's otherwise doing well!
 
Let's bump this up to see if anyone else has input -- it seems a little quiet this weekend.

And how is Morton doing?

I am curious of how slowly was he weaned from the Pred (steroid) ?
