I have no idea what's going on with Ravan? His Bg is climbing fast!

He ate good last night & this morning. Acting OK, Peeing & Pooping. What is Happening?
I increased the dose last night & he's still going up????

@Jill & Alex (GA)

to be checked out by the vet.

My vet is out of town for 3 weeks! Ravan had blood work just 4 weeks ago. Everything looked good. Even his Kidney values have stabilized. Dr. said his teeth looked good also.

His BG started rising at 3:30 yesterday morning. It's steady climbing. So far he's acting OK eating & even playing, chasing leaves. In 18 months I've never seen this happen so quickly?

Should I raise his does PM if he's still high? I've been using calipers & only increasing by tiny amounts?

I was wondering about that also ,but he's had 3 seizures previously & it didn't affect his BG then?

I'm worried !Too much going on with Peggy Sue & now Ravan!

I would do like Jill suggested, and go ahead and take Ravan in, especially if this keeps up over the weekend.
It can get rough with multiple things going on, but thankfully, you have a good vet, right?

Do you mean the screw around in timing with Peggy Sue's chemo injections? I'm sorry, I don't recall more right now. Our vet keeps disappointing me in small ways, and I have one more appointment there Monday, before I think seriously about going somewhere else.

Joy, I re-read some past posts, and had also missed a few. Just want to say I'm so sorry you are experiencing health scares with all three of your dear cats at the same time. Sending you best wishes for ALL of them.
In the last twenty years, I have had pets with miscellaneous health problems, including cancer (dog), glaucoma that ended up taking an eye (different dog), but never experienced health problems in cats other than the dreaded blockages most often caused by feeding cats dry food. I learned the dry food lesson in a very painful way. Then I became a kitty foster failure due to Tina's brother dying under anesthesia. They fixed the blockage though:(. Beside my dearest Tina, I have 5 eleven year old cats. This diabetes adventure with Tina has me scared to pieces of failing health in the others.
You are in my thoughts and I hope Ravan, Peggy Sue and Alice all feel better very soon. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I wish I could find a veterinarian who would be exceptionally trained, cared deeply, had on-call, home visit staff in case of emergencies, and more. I really wish there was such a thing. Instead I feel like I have to learn a lot before I go, always verify, possibly argue in the nicest way possible, make extra phone calls, and on and on. I've about worn myself out trying to get Tina in the best shape possible.

Unless you have another vet you'd rather see, you'll have to go to whomever is covering his practice while he's out of town if Ravan needs to see a vet.

I'm in the same time zone as you. Make a decision before closing time so you aren't left with an expensive ER as your only choice.

That's a plus!

I'm happy to hear he doesn't seem to be bothered. I have no idea what's wrong. None of us can tell/diagnosis over the Internet.

I have seen BG rise as quickly as Ravan's has. I've even seen it go higher. When it happened with Alex it was usually a sign of a p-titis flare starting up, but I don't know what it *could* be with Ravan. However, there were also times when it just appeared to be a blip on the radar... gone as quickly as it came on.

It's weird with cats... they can be seemingly fine one minute, and not fine only a minute later. I think cats are masters of hiding physical problems.

I can't tell you what to do or even know what's best in your situation. All I can do is suggest if you're truly scared and worried the best thing to do is have him seen by a vet. You've had pets for years. If your gut is telling you something is wrong, there is probably something wrong.

These seizures loom in the back of my mind. Ravan having one so recently makes this more concerning than it might have been otherwise. Having him seen by a vet may be best for that reason alone.
Should I raise his does PM if he's still high? I've been using calipers & only increasing by tiny amounts?
That's a call you'll have to make based on your knowledge of Ravan AND whether you're willing, able, and can commit to monitoring him carefully if needed. If you feel he needs more than a minute dose adjustment, increase by up to 0.25 unit. Play it by ear. Give him what you think he needs. Don't worry about 'protocol'.

FWIW, I've never found calipers necessary nor am I a proponent of calipers except for when more than one person in a household is administering shots. IMHO, they do more for a caregiver's confidence and peace of mind than anything else... and there's something to be said for that, but to each his own.

Just my thoughts...

Hi Joy, I am so sorry to hear about Ravan. Is it possible since you noted he wasn't eating very much, that he could have a dental issue? That always spikes Bubba's numbers. When he went 4 weeks ago, did the vet look into his mouth? A sore tooth could contribute to that.

And I am sorry to hear about the seizure 6 days ago. I believe that was the first one in a while, right? Is he still getting the CBD oil?

I am with Jill on taking him to the vet and having him checked out even if it means seeing a new vet. Something isn't right for all of a sudden for him to pop up like that.

I would raise his dose in accordance to the numbers. When they go out of the regulated numbers into yellows, I throw the slight increases out the window and go for the .25 of a unit increases. JMHO.

Please keep us posted! Sending lots and lots of vines and hugs :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hope you can figure out what's got Ravan shooting up so high. Is there any chance he found something to eat that he shouldn't have? My only other thought would be infection of some sort, but I wouldn't think he would be eating well and playing if he's got an infection.

Yes my Vet checked his mouth & said it all looked good. I looked in his mouth today & he's one of those cats that just don't get stuff on his teeth. They all look good & he didn't mind me poking around either.
He's acting like he feels real good.Last few days he's eating good, even his raw meat . When he was outside he was chasing leaves! He was very affectionate. Heading butting me & purring! This is very confusing!

Replying to questions asked in your PM since we are a peer-reviewed message board:
Some of the people here said each brand is different so using the calipers would make the dose more accurate?
Yes, using calipers will allow for consistent dosing.
I'm wondering, if I set the calipers to .5 dose & just ignore the lines on the syringe won't he get .5 unit on any syringe I use?
No, I don't believe so because each brand of syringe may be a little different.
I increased by a few points am. Do you think I should go to .75 tonight? Or wait till tomorrow?
My opinion...
If I were in your shoes I would increase 0.25u from the last consistent dose you were giving. According to Ravan's ss it was 0.5- unit. Hold for 6 cycles before making further adjustments unless he earns a reduction.
What can I say, he's eating good Pooping & peeing fine & is playful & loving?
This is all good!
This just doesn't make any sense! In 18 months I've never seen him go high when he was feeling good?
Sometimes things don't make sense, and we remain at a total loss. It may be nothing. It may develop into something. It's anybody's guess.

Just had a thought...
try replacing the battery in the meter. Sometimes they throw wonky numbers before they stop working.

As far as the calipers go, you need to set the calipers to the specific syringe you are using according to the instructions in the caliper video by Marje. IF you change syringes, you need to start all over with your calculations as it changes from syringe to syringe.

FWIW, I've never found calipers necessary nor am I a proponent of calipers except for when more than one person in a household is administering shots. @Jill & Alex (GA)
Jill, I Appreciate your (unknowingly) thinking/ thoughts of mine: FWIW... and IMHO...
Thanks ;) :)

Neko used to occasionally throw me random pink cycles. I would sigh, and give her 24 hours to see if it was “just a thing” or she needed more juice. Most times it was just random something or other and she was in normal numbers next day. Raven is pretty flat so far, curious to see where he goes next,
