Another Mango update

Since Mango had high ketones and a vet visit last Thursday, he has been doing pretty UNTIL today. When I can't get a pee sample I test with the ketone test meter and got a HIGH reading this morning which meant it's above 8. I freaked and called the Vet. He is not familiar with the ketone blood meter and told me to just use the test strips so I will do so. Mango didn't eat much of his breakfast but made up for it later by eating all of his am meal with lots of water. Now it is dinner time and he is not hungry so I gave his insulin anyway as on our Vet visit Thursday Mango didn't eat and I withheld his dose. Was told i should give it anyway because insulin, feeding and H2O is what brings down ketones. I will test him a few time tonight before I go to bed to make sure he is safe. My Vet is puzzled as his BG numbers are not that high so his ketones shouldn't be high. Has anyone experienced this or have an idea what may be going on? We should get some answers on the curve test as he didn't like that the BG numbers didn't move much and he may switch him to Lantus. Will the switch to another insulin help? Keeping my fingers crossed and will wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks for reading my concerns and saga. It's been a roller coaster.

Hi Marianne,

High Ketones are an emergency. I am not familiar with your readings, but if your meter says high, then it's very concerning. And if he doesn't eat, he could go into ketoacidosis in a matter of hours. Can you go to your vet today? Give him plenty of fluids and try to feed him more in the meantime, but please, take him to the vet or the ER clinic ASAP. That's what I would do (my cat was DKA two months ago, spent 4 days at the clinic in intensive care).

Any update on Mango and the ketones?
Good morning Bron,
Tested with the pee strip last night and it was down to 4. Mango still didn't want to eat as I remembered I still had 1//4 tablet of Mirtazapine and gave him that. Before I went off to bed he was ready to eat. Of all things he wanted to eat was our leftovers fried chicken so he ate 1/2 a chicken breast along with pure bites liver snacks and chicken. Then he drank water. I went to bed feeling we adverted a trip to the ER Vet. This morning the pee stick showed 1.5. So we are good! Mango ate his breakfast and another 1/2 can of FF. Now we are Doing the hourly BG curve. Each hour comes up so quick as I've been up since 6 am and it heading toward our third ear prick. Going to be a long day. Thank you so much for your concern for us. It is appreciated by me and Mango.

Thank you Penelope and I do know it can be dangerous. So far so good. I called our Vet when I got the reading yesterday, he assured me that the BG was low and the ketones will be OK even though they are high as long as Mango eats etc. Well he didn't eat dinner so he got the med for nausea and before I went off to bed he wanted to eat. He ate, drank water and this morning his ketone reading is showing a trace 1.5 on the pee stick. We got lucky and I am grateful for your concern. This board is such a wonderful group of caring folks. Love each of you!

That's good news to hear.
And still eating this morning!
Good luck with the curve.

Headed to do my third hour curve test. The hour comes up so quickly and I've been awake since 5:45 am. I am ready for a nap! It will be interesting to see exactly where his BG goes over the course of the 12 hours. Depending on this test, Vet may or may not switch him to Landus from the Prozinc. Started out with Vetsulin. I will keep you posted. :bighug:
