Looks like I picked a good day to do Diane's first curve!

We switched to Alpha Trak at the vets request for now. So I know 70 is the point of concern. Surprised she dropped to 90 so soon. Keeping her dry dm and gravy wet food nearby just in case

Should I test every hour or stick to every 2 at this point? I will be home until 12:30 (though if her numbers don't go up I'm either only staying out for a couple hours or skipping)

Super nervous, but hoping she safely stays in greens and blues. :)

That's the plan! She'll hate me by the end of the day, but it'll be good to get a lot of data today.

At what point do you know if they need a reduction?

67 is the take action number, give 1T ffg and retest in 30 and a reduction is earned

Thank you!

She is at 62! Giving her gravy fancy feast and going to check again in 15 min to 30 min

She's acting completely fine at least

She's at 95 +4 hours. 1 hour since dipping to 62.

My vet said that I should've let her go a little longer to see how low she would drop. Hopefully I didn't mess up her curve but it was just too nerve-wracking and I didn't want an emergency situation. I know alpha trak 70 and up is normal...so 62 just stressed me out

Is it possible her levels will drop again after the high carb food wears off? I thought I read about that on one of the stickies...

What's the reason why your vet wants you to use the AT? Is it so the numbers cater to their understanding?

I think once you figure out how you want to manage Diane's diabetes and if you'd like to follow the methods here at FDMB, you may want to consider switching back to the Relion for reasons such as cost and that the methods here are based on human glucometer numbers.

Yes, this is possible. In my experience, I usually stop testing once I see that my cat is staying steady in safe numbers for at least 2 hours without food intervention (and also depending on where in the cycle he is - if he's doing it before nadir, I will definitely continue to test. If he's doing it at nadir, then I'd feel safe to stop testing). Since you're doing a curve today, it's a perfect opportunity to see how HC food affects Diane.

Yes, I don't think she understands fully the train of thought behind the human meters. I definitely plan to switch back to relion though, and will likely just keep some alpha strips handy if Diane dips low. I'm just doing this in the beginning so that I can communicate with the vet without them constantly telling me I need to use the pet meter. She did say once she's better regulated and we figure out a good dose that she'd be fine with switching back to a human meter though. I may either use the human meter or switch to using the insulinx strips in the alpha trak meter (I hear they are pretty similar).

Diane usually is at her lowest in the late afternoon, just prior to her PM shot. So I will definitely keep a close eye on her throughout the day.

I respectfully disagree with your vet. She went low enough to earn a reduction. I wouldn’t risk a hypo by going lower. Congrats on the reduction.

Thank you! Diane has been diabetic for 4 years, but just started insulin. I wasn't expecting a reduction so quickly, but I'm excited about it for sure! :)

I did cut out her Purina DM dry food. She only got 1/8 cup with dinner, but it seems like cutting it out has definitely improved her numbers.

That may take a while for some kitties and some cats never have that "perfect" dose  They just need what they need at the moment. But I'm glad you're testing and giving insulin now :) Please ask us as many questions as you'd like. We're all happy and eager to help!

I agree with you and phooey on your vet -- keep Diane safe ! having to intervene later with a hypo episode, or even one approaching that, is NOT good for her

on Catcat's curve at the vet, they let him go down to 52 without intervening -- taught us all that their initial dosage recommendation was too high !

Well, thankfully Diane didn't dip back down too low from what I could see. We had to go out in the afternoon so I didn't get a test in between +5 and +12.

But, her PMPS is 145 so we're right back to where we were this AM! Going to do a reduction to .75 units and will test before bed. Here's to hoping she stays out of the lime greens tonight.
