Hi all. I'm new to this board. I'm reaching out to all (especially my Canadian sugar baby parents) for some suggestions of a low carb (preferably lower fat) wet food that is not Fancy Feast or Friskies and the like. My Lucky was on Vet food before diagnoses. He transition to FF and his BG went down but he developed pancreas issues. So my Vet said that he needs a better diet. I've tried a bunch of food recently that has raised Lucky's BG. Right now I'm thinking Tiki cat slivers but i'm looking for good pate. He tried the BFF chicken only pate and doesn't like it. I thought i'd found a good one in Instinct limited ingredient food but that has pea protein (at least the salmon did). I want to find options that are less seafood as I will just give him seafood as a treat but not as a part of his regular diet.

So, I would welcome any suggestions for a low carb lower fat wet food available in Canada.

Thanks so much.

Hi Lucky's Mom, I had an idea when I read your post in the Intro forum, and thought I would bring it here for consideration. I decided to get Idjit off the canned food diet and tried a raw meat diet with a commercial complete supplement. We have been successful with the transition and he is doing very well, eats with gusto and looks great.

When I started my research I found this product: TCfeline Premix http://tcfeline.com/ but they only ship in Canada. So I chose the FoodFurLife EZ Complete supplement (which also ships to Canada, but with a higher shipping rate of course :()

You get to choose the protein, and so the amount of fat also. It might be worth some time to research and see if this is something that you might want to try.

We use chicken breast and thigh, turkey breast and thigh, and beef chuck. We tried pork, but Idjit doesn't care for it. I buy skinless boneless chicken pieces, but have to cut the meat off the turkey bones (that's what husbands can help out with, right?) and use my food processor to chunk up the meat. Then mix, spoon into containers and freeze. I am using special tempered baby food jars for freezing, they have ounce markings so I know that Idjit gets his 2 ounces per serving. The FFL site helped me calculate just how much food he should get a day. I spend very little time each week for prep and it goes very fast, just using a small food scale to weigh the meat, the food processor, a bowl, measuring cups and spoon.

If you have other sources of protein in your area, you can try those too. One of our members @Marje and Gracie uses many different proteins like rabbit.

If you visit www.catinfo.org there is a homemade recipe. I considered that, but I wasn't sure I could find, or wanted to go to the trouble of gathering the different supplements or organ meats so that the diet would be nutritionally complete. (I hate liver, I hate even looking at it so that was an obstacle for me)

I hope this gives you another option at least to research and consider.

I do source all my meats locally here in Arizona. I rotate proteins so I don’t feed the same one twice in a row and I use venison, elk, bison, pork loin, Turkey, chicken, and lamb. I was feeding goat but lost the supplier.

@Wendy&Neko is a great resource for raw suppliers in Canada.

Thanks so much for the information. I’ve been hearing more and more about raw diets for dogs and now cats. How does it work in terms of free feeding? My Lucky is a nibbler.

I buy PC extra meaty chicken for Rhubarb- low carbs and she likes it. Medium size cans, purple wrapper.

I give Idjit breakfast, lunch and dinner..not tightly scheduled but he lets me know if I've gone past the feeding time! But I am retired and at his total disposal. He does get poached or baked chicken pieces for treats, and we still give him a couple of spoonfuls of canned food for a bedtime snack, just so he will still eat it in case of some kind of upheaval and he might only get canned food.

He is food driven and always cleans his plate at every meal, and he gets 2 ounces of food at each meal. I have read not to leave raw food out over a half hour but we have never had that problem. If your cat is not regulated yet, he/she might need more frequent meals.

Tell us more about your cat and what diabetic treatment you are using please. Perhaps we can help in other areas.

dry treats, not wet food, but check to see if any stores in your area carry those from The Granville Island Pet Treatery tgipt.com out of Vancouver
mostly targeted towards dogs, but check their Pure Protein treats -- Catcat loves the sardines

There are lots of canned food options in Canada. By the way, the low fat for pancreatic cat thing is old vet school, and relevant for dogs, not cats.

Natures Variety, but not the limited ingredient ones which have pea protein, Weruva various lines, Rawz, Canada Fresh. I fed primarily raw food, buying some commercially made in Canada, and later making my own from TC Feline and FoodFurLife. I would get raw meat from either the exotic meats butcher, or even the local family owned grocery store has kangaroo and bison. Raw pet food stores here sell just plain bulk meat such as elk and ostrich, as well as the more common ones like chicken, turkey, beef, goat.

If you want to buy commercially made to try before making your own, good vendors are Carnivora, Red Dog Blue Kat, Natural Instincts. At least on the west coast, I am sure there are good ones in Ontario too. Spend time in a pet food store specializing in raw, ask questions. Some suppliers have small samples you can get for free, or if you eat meat, just try feeding a small bit.

Sorry for my late reply. Lucky is on Lantus 2x a day @.75 units. He is not regulated. I’m still searching for the right food for him. I thought I had found it in Rawz but he stopped liking many of the flavours and it is very expensive to waste. I just started using VBB Healthy Meats Lamb and he absolutely loves it! His numbers seem ok with it as well. What is interesting is that I can’t seem to find any discussion on it in any of the FB groups.
