I just don't get it, I just don't get it, I just don't get it!
I woke up every other hour last night to make a curve and understand what he does during the night.
Well, he goes in the blues for, I guess, at least three hours. But then! He has a AMPS of 635.
He hardly had any food during the night so I don't believe the numbers are food influenced.
Those curves that he does are way too steep.

Interestingly, his nadir is later than I thought: +7/8?

I think I'll only take a +5 today.

Little baby in his garden this morning, humming the fresh air.

I had a nervous breakdown yesterday evening. I got overwhelmed with sadness and fear. Of the 5 cats I officially had, he is the last one alive, and I am not ready to let him go. It kills me to see his health decline. His stools were very pale yesterday and I believe it's related to the pancreas, gallbladder or liver? Not great. I know he is 15 but man, I'm fighting hard to keeping him alive, but at the same time I feel so powerless. He does not eat big meals, so I have to give him little snacks mixed with water wherever he lays, all day/all night. Every single time I pray that he finishes his dish. How long does it take for steroids to be effective? @Wendy&Neko ?
BTW, I bought him some Ziwi venison flavor, but monsieur Macka prefers Fancy Feast from the supermarket.

In my dream earlier today, Macka was on top of a tree and my husband was asking me if it was okay to let him climb it :) :) Oh Yes please Macka! climb all the trees you want!

I think Macka is just adjusting to his new lower numbers, it is progress! this also shows that Macka seems to clear bounces fairly quickly! GREAT news!! Let's look on the positive side! Macka has seen yellow and blues TWICE in the last 2 days!! this is amazing! he is doing awesome on the diabetes front!

HAAAA! of course Macka loves FF more  isn't that just the way :) good news for you anyway $$ I have found that in the beginning Friskies and FF made Mowgs poo turn colors... could this be the same for Macka? otherwise you might want to just reach out to your vet to see if you should be concerned. It is good that even if he is only eating a little at a time that at least he is eating :)

Just to avoid confusion if anyone happens upon this thread sometime, I'm withdrawing my comment after further analysis and calculations. Sorry Penelope!

Just offering...not to throw a wrench in, but it might help explain some of the higher numbers if I'm interpreting your notes correctly.
Wow, thank you for this insight. I was not aware. I only fed him Ziwi a little at dinner time and he did not like it anyway, but dang, I just bought 4 of them ^^; I hope Chou-Fleur will eat them. Even with Ziwi, he went down to the blues!

Right now, Macka is at 406 @+5, so down a little from the bounce, and eating his favorite beef classic FF mixed with water :p.

Thank you!! How do you explain that he goes from blacks to blues in a single cycle though? Isn't it extreme? If he sees blues, I would expect him to be in the purple during AMPS and PMPS time? Because with such variations, it's going to be difficult to increase the dose, isn't it?

It is extreme! But normal!!

Think of it like this: Macka spent so much time in the blacks and reds before he was diagnosed that his body became used to it. His body thinks those numbers are normal. So when he gets numbers that are ACTUALLY normal - in the blues and greens, his body panics as if he’s having a hypoglycaemic event, his body thinks it doesn’t have enough glucose so it releases more so that the body will ‘normalize’ to the blacks and reds. Now that you’re treating with insulin his normal will become lower and lower and you will stop seeing blacks and reds.

I haven’t seen a red in Mowgli’s sheet for some time now. So trust me it will come! Put on your patience pants :P

For Mowgli a couple weeks but we still see pinks all the time. We use a human meter though so results aren’t completely comparable. I don’t really care about AMPS and PMPS. I focus more on what values he spends most of the day in... those are the values that should put you at peace :) for example last night you know that Macka spent at LEAST 5 hours in blues and yellows! That’s awesome :)

Macka has spent some good time in blues and yellows the past few days! We are having wild swings, too, and based on what I've seen here on the forum, it seems like that's just part of the story for newly diagnosed kitties.

I totally know what you mean about the meltdowns. I've had a few myself. You feel so responsible for everything -- even the stuff that's out of your hands.

Yes Jenn, exactly! You're in total control but at the same time you're absolutely not and you can only wait. And in the meantime you see your baby being weak, and you worry so much, I worry so much, wondering, is this the end soon? Are these ugly numbers going to fry his brain? His pancreas? How long can it last before he gives up? And the lack of sleep does not help with mental health :(

The swings must be part of the story, for sure, but when I look at other cat's spreadsheets, they look pretty good to me, compared to poorly regulated Macka.
I can see that Perry went lower these days, it's good but such a nerve wreck! I'm so sorry you have to go through this. It's so scary. Sending you big hugs of comfort.

How do you explain that he goes from blacks to blues in a single cycle though?
Plain and simple, he's bouncing because he's not used to blues. Yes, cats can go up that high that fast. It's not the food. First times Neko saw green, she went so high the meter couldn't register it or "Hi".

I found it took about three days before the budesonide made a noticeable difference, but it was complicated in Neko's case. She was also diagnosed with a heart condition at the same time and starting new meds for that too. With a civvie, it just took a couple days, but that was prednisolone. Budesonide is locally acting in the gut (which is good), but it's release action isn't as even as pred.

As for Ziwipeak, I trust Dr. Pierson's calculation. Many peolple here have fed Ziwipeak without noticing it as higher carb. Transition to a new food should be done slowly. Fancy Feast is not a good option for IBD kitties.

It's great that Macka went outside and wanted to climb a tree. That means he's feeling good. That is very important! By the way, it took Neko over a year to stop having red in her spreadsheet. Some cats just like to bounce.
