Mowgli’s in a bounce this morning... again :rolleyes:

Over the past month or so I have been noticing that he has been having a pretty aggressive onset in the evenings. I’m unsure how to slow this onset down without resorting to higher carb food. I do try and stick with Friskies at night as it typically is a higher carb LC food. I plan on being more diligent gathering +1 data for better onset definition.

I’m wondering if Mowgli is starting to have longer duration out of the Lantus through the day and having some dose overlap in the evening.

Does anyone else notice a difference in their cats daytime / nighttime durations?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to slow Mowg’s PM onset’s to limit his AM bounces? Thoughts and opinions welcome :)

Hope everyone has a great hump day :):p

You can try feeding a higher carb at PS and see if that stops the dives and levels the curve out.
Sometimes no matter what you do you still may have lower numbers due to so many other factors that effect the insulin durations.

The longer durations is a Good Thing! :D

Hope you have a great hump day too!
Thanks Debra,

I was considering trying something like a MC / LC mix but I feel like this is out of my experience level, I like it when Mowgli is in greens as long as he is being safe ;)

I know what you mean about experience, I feel very limited in that area but I was told to try a higher carb food to level out the curves and to help with the low numbers.

What do you use to do that Debra? an MC FF? I have the Tuna Grilled and Mowgli basically loves it... he just isnt usually allowed it ;)

Unfortunately you will only learn with trial and error. I would start with a gradual increase, don't do anything dramatically high. You probably can start with a different low carb food that has higher carbs than your normal canned food. Do it in baby steps and see how the food effects the cycle. If it doesn't work, all you can say is that you tried :)
I don't usually like to give my opinions but I was told this and it works for Yoyo. Usually because I test soooo much I introduce more carbs at +1 to level out the cycle and this helps keep Yoyo from diving into lime green. I still make mistakes and give toooo many carbs at times and YES I have ruined his cycle. But like I was told, I am learning thru it....hopefully:)

That is fair! I have tried higher carb % LC foods with Friskies... he had the salmon for supper last night though so as far as carb % goes it's on th elower end of the friskies scale :)

I'll try some more experiments as time goes on :D

Mowgli is doing Great! It's only been 4 months!
It seems most of the cats have lower BG in the evening hours. As far as the "bounce" It just takes time. It took Ravan a year till he stopped getting Pink #'s Jamie's Bella took a long while also & now he's doing Great!

I only fed H carb if Ravan dropped below 50. Mowgli's BG last night was Beautiful!
For me I wouldn't mess with #'s like that by giving H carb. The longer he stays in green the better!

Thanks for the reminder Joy!

I was happy with Mowgli's numbers last night too! I just want to slow his drops a bit so that he doesn't bounce so hard every morning... I was just using a higher carb LC not actual HC :D

I'll take a look through Ravan and Bellas SSs for inspiration! they will be the perfect subjects since they have such beautiful numbers all the time :)

I've never really been able to feed the curve. Good luck if you try. Just make sure you take good notes so you'll know what works and what doesn't.

Good Advice Carla! thanks :D

I'm not sure Mowgli will be too receptive to feeding the curve either, although when he goes low I do find his BG can be maintained with food somewhat ... but you know what,... that could even be coincidence :|

hard to tell with Catcat -- I've tried feeding the curve often, and SOMETIMES it works, sometimes it's hard to tell

at least when on Vetsulin, I think my feeding him Friskies at night may have kept him from bottoming out while I was asleep

also, I'm not sure if feeding protein-only food makes much if any difference at snack time -- I do that more to increase his calories from protein, since he's still a bit under optimum weight -- and it may prompt his pancreas to do something, one can only hope

What a fantastic night Mr. Mowgs had, great job buddy! Hoping he can get over this bounce and "bounce back" to those nice numbers ;)

Interested to see if anyone has thoughts on the overlap situation - I too have noticed Roo going much lower at night sometimes, though not lately haha. Have a great day Amanda! :)

Thanks Armish!

If it isn't overlap, Mowgli has been having some aggressive onsets ;)

Just thinking, maybe Mowg's just needs more time on this dose in order for it to level out?
Especially now that you're using calipers, his dose will be way more consistent. When using syringes that are never the same, plus eyeballing the dose, it's possible he was getting a drop more or less here and there and that can make a big difference in some kitties. :):):) Or it could be overlap and you'll need to play with his food

You definitely could be right there Sonia, I will be curious to see what difference the calipers make, very good point. I will hold off on trying to do anything fancy for the next couple weeks to see if steady dosing makes a difference :D

if it's overlap... it's overlap

Okay, bear with me here: I saw a chart somewhere that pointed out the various places on a cat that you could inject insulin and it noted that certain places had faster onset than others. I have done so much reading, from so many sources — some of them surely bad, others excellent — over the past few months as I've been trying to wrap my head around Perry's diagnosis that I have no idea where I saw this, unfortunately. But you have so many experienced folks on this thread that maybe this will ring a bell and we can get it confirmed or debunked.

I think it's Jamie that has patience pants @Bellasmom and she'd probably lend them to you lol Bella's not giving her much reason to wear them lately! :D

I have totally heard the same thing, and earlier this year when Lyane switched to injecting on Ti’s side he went super low. It might not have been the injection site but it was right at the time she switched. After that I actually started noting where I inject.

Two of the last three early onsets have been scruff shots but last night was LHS. Most mornings I do scruff shots because..: I haven’t had coffee yet :P

Jen could be on to something too. @Perry & Jenn
Leo gets a scruff shot at night because Len does it and I do flank in the mornings. Everyone says cats tend to go lower at night, but not Leo, that I'm aware of. Anytime he's had some lows has been during the day after his morning's flank shot. ???

OMG!
Linda sent me a pair of patience pants -- more threads than fabric in that pair --

these -- I'd be tempted to wear -- isn't everyone donning "wearable art" these days, with the LuLaRoe fad ? I love the cats saying OMG here

looked like Catcat was messing around at least in the intertidal zone, maybe chasing the plaid fish .. hard to believe that fish actually come in that pattern
