Orson BG is 138. I arrived home 15 minutes late he was due at 5:30pm it is now 5:52pm.
Not sure how to shoot the next dose. He is currently on 2u Lantus x2 day

Thank you,
Edye

Can you test as often as necessary tonight? Do you have plenty of supplies? (strips, high carb food like Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers, Karo/honey/syrup) ?

If so, you could go ahead and give the 2U dose tonight but you'll want to make sure to get a +1 and +2 so if you need to you can intervene early.

Thank you for responding-I have 13 strips for the AlphaTrak - I was supposed to get another canister today but they didn't arrive. I do have strips for my Contour by Bayer if I have to switch I am covered.
My question is why wouldn't I just give him less? This is what concerns me-why risk the possibility of him going to low.

With the depot in play, even if you gave a lesser amount, there's no guarantee he wouldn't still drop too low.

On TR, we make them "earn" their reductions in dose by dropping below 68 on the AlphaTrak

If he can "show you" that 2U is too much, then you go down to 1.75 and start again until he either "earns" another reduction, or we see that 1.75 may not be enough again and he "fails the reduction"

The whole idea is to have them "earn" enough reductions until they're down to zero!!

As long as you're able to test and have the supplies you need, YOU are always in control of his blood glucose....that's why we stress home testing so much.

If he starts to drop too low or too quickly, you just give him a little higher carb food to help keep him safe.

ot

Ok got it-so the crucial time is the first 2 hours after a dose??? He seems to be dropping low around +7-8-9.
Next question now I am off my 5:30/5:30 routine. How do I get back to that since I am going to dose him almost an hour later?

I have dry Purina DM, and Science Diet Indoor Dry-so I can give him that. I also have Karo Syrup on the counter with his supplies.

Can you test again to see what direction his numbers are moving? How long since that first test?

You can work your way back to your chosen times by shooting 15 minutes early every cycle or 30 minutes once a day.

Next time you get a chance, pick up some Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers....the dry foods take too long to get into their system and can take longer to get out. It's better to give foods that can get into them quickly.

She means tonight.....remember me telling you about stalling? Don't feed and re-test in 20-30 minutes to see if the number comes up without the influence of food

Crud I forgot about that
ok he got about 2 bitefuls and I tested again (30 min) he is 153. I don't think the food could have influenced it that quickly. I am talking a matter of 1 minute

That's fine....he's on his way up then so hopefully that will make you feel better about going ahead and shooting the 2U tonight.

He's really looking pretty good for so early in your journey!

Well that is good news-but I'm a nervous wreck. This is scary. But I feel so much more confident with this group then with the vets guidance because he would be no where around tonight to answer this question. Ok so I am testing again at 7:30 and 8:30pm???

PS.
Where does the 6:15 test fall into-is that technically a +1?? which column would I record the 153?

much better to have food on hand with several levels of carbohydrate -- pick your poison from Dr Lisa's list -- mark the cans with the carb % so you remember, so you do't grab one of them any time you're in a hurry (yes it happens :banghead: )

if you don't have medium or high carb food, in a pinch you can put a drop or two of Karo or honey mixed in with his regular food -- those wear off fast but can keep you out of hypo territory until the food kicks in -- been there, done that

The number you actually shoot is always the Pre-shot.....you can also put the 1st test in the PMPS cell....I'd usually do something like ### @ +12, ### @+13

Just stack them in the cell....but you'll have to color code it yourself

several ways to record an "uneven hour" time -- you can put it in the remarks at the far right end, or do what I do and record what the + number really is, in the adjacent space -- take a look at my spreadsheet if that's confusing, can't think of how to describe it

that is, if you aren't testing every 20 minutes and need to put several values in one slot

I can put 2 numbers in 1 cell?
Can you access his spreadsheet and show me I'm not sure what you mean?

Done....I think the 2nd test (the 153) was about an hour late, right? So it would have been 13 hours since his last shot

Now the rest of the cells still correspond to the number of hours since the SHOT....that's how they always should be done....however many hours since the last shot....no matter how long that is.

I just saw you posted on his SS - thank you. so you have 138(I may forget the exact #'s)+1, under that 2, under that 153, under that 3. What do the 2 and 3 mean?

NEVER MIND I JUST REALIZED IS +12 AND +13

Got it-Thank you! Sometimes I just need to see what someone is talking about-and then I wonder-why didn't I get it?;)

you're more than welcome -- I've seen several different ways of handling it, this is the one I figured out that makes sense to me, everyone learns a little bit differently, some things work better, depends, I guess on how your brain is wired and what you've learned about yourself and the world through experience and education; plus it also needs to make sense to others who look at it, mine may be a bit confusing at first

:bookworm::confused::D:joyful:

With all the colors and wild patterns a spreadsheet can look a bit crazy.
