Hello,
My vet just prescribed Adequan. I obviously wanted to do all of the injections at home subcutaneously but they never told me what syringes to use.
If you are using Adequan for your kitty, could you please let me know what needles would be best and where I can purchase/order.

I saw that you were using insulin syringes for the Adequan injections ...what gauge are they? I’ve read that Adequan is a thicker is Consistency compared to insulin...

I used 29 originally since I had some. Then I used 30 and 31 gauge needles. I might also have usedIt just takes a while for the syringe to fill with the Adequan when you putt the lunger back
 
Vet told me trying to squeeze Adequan thru a thin needle can cause bruising. Vet recommended 25ga and I did use those at first, but now use 28g needles.

Thank you to everyone to replied to my syringe question.
Also, the vet recommended .16ml of Adequan and Malachai currently weighs 17.3lbs.
I know the recommended dose is between .5-2.5mg per pound, so looks like the vet prescribed slightly less that 1mg per lb.
It seems like most cats that weigh around what Malachai does are on a much higher dose....
Do you think the vet was just erring on the side of caution? I’ve read you can’t really “overdose” Adequan.

Bronx is prescribed .4ml & he is about 21lbs. After a week or two of multiple injections, vet said inject once every 3 weeks. I give Bronx .4ml every 12 or so days.

I actually use Monoject U-40 syringes, so he gets 16u which equals .4ml (40/2.5=16)
Conversion is 100/40=2.5

She said the force of thicker liquid through a smaller needle causes the bruising? I didn't like the size of the 25ga and Bronx doesn't mind the 28ga at all.

Hi!

My 2 cents.... Rico is about 12-13 pounds and Dre is about 18-19
The way my vet doses is for instance Dre we would round UP to 20X2+40 so dose is 0.4 on a 1ml syringe.
I round Rico up to 15X2=30 so 0.3 but a skinny as he is light on his feet.
My vet stressed to round up with adequan.
The boys have no reaction (other than good) to the shot.

I started the boys on adequan when they were about 15 and 16 and they got 1x a month after the loading dose. Over the years we have upped the monthly to weekly or even 4 days apart if they are stiff. They are now 20 and 21 and go up and down 4 flights of stairs and jump on the couch etc... adequan is a miracle drug!

HELP!
So I injected Malachai last night with his first dose of Adequan. I did it subcutaneously in his back left hip/stomach area.
He is limping BADLY on the left hip this morning. Has anybody experienced this? Is it of any concern? I read the only side effects are diarrhea and cats in general don’t have a lot of side effects.
What could be the issue?
 
Both of my vets are closed today since it’s a Holiday. I found one thread on here from 2012- lady’s cat was limping as well and then the next morning, the cat was fine. Not sure if I should run him to the ER or just see how he does throughout the day.

Everyone is saying that this is uncommon (same with the Feline Acro group on facebook). I’m stressing since my vet is closed...

I think the ones I use are 29 gauge

Yes, my vet told me that and recommended 25ga. I use 28ga since I found that a good happy medium, 25ga seemed huge even though I did use them at first and they didn't bother Bronx. With thicker needles, it is more important to insert it with the bevel up:

Well, I hate to report that his tumor is coming back.
We had terrified and almost Immediate results, at first.
Within a month of SRT done at WSU we started seeing positive changes. Malachai started having insulin reductions and it was like I had my old cat back overnight. He was playful and happy like a kitten- I could just sense his joy. We went from 23 units to about 9.5 in 3 months. From 3-6 months, he held steady at 10 units and I started seeing him regress...mostly in his energy and overall mood. He once again became lethargic and irritable- especially at his brother.
We are back up to 20 units today and going upwards in insulin. I wish I could take him to WSU again but it’s just too far. He had bloodwork done several weeks ago and all his internal organs look great...his heart murmur his also holding steady at a level 3. I wish it was more affordable in CA but costs here are still around $12,000. It just breaks my heart.
I started him on Adequan as he started limping..I’m hoping this atleast can give him some more relief along with the CBD and Gaba.
Any other suggestions for QOL would be appreciated.

I am sorry to hear the regression on the tumor. Paul is Bronx's Dad, and Bronx had SRT in May 2017. It took quite awhile for results. He can give you a more clear update. His spreadsheet is also updated.

Our latest from WSU is that they are no longer doing SRT, or at least they removed it from their website. So that may not be an option anymore. You could try cabergoline. Some forum members have been successful with it, and some have not had success.

I don't have other QOL suggestions, except to give Malachai lots of scratches and brushing. Our Acro kittehs need all the love we can give them. I hope you can periodically keep us updated on how Malachai is doing. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Acro is such a cruddy disease. I hate what it did to Leoberry. :(

I am sorry to report that we released Leo last Friday (7/4/2019). He died just over age 13, from Acro complications - throat stridor and mouth growths, severely inhibiting his ability to chew and swallow. And the small cell lymphoma cropped back up. Leo lived 33 months after SRT, and it really helped him. There is a chart in the 3rd tab of his spreadsheet showing the insulin reduction over time. It is even possible, the Acro was dormant. His diabetes could have been pancreatic, or even a side effect of long term steroid use. Leo was on prednisolone for 2 years to combat the lymphoma. We miss him so much.
