Good morning everyone!

I am in high spirits today because my first shot yesterday was successful and my Roo got a few yellow numbers after two weeks of solid pinks!

Timing this morning was a little wack since we went to the vet for them to demonstrate proper shooting technique. While there I had them shave a couple of patches on his flank to ensure that there are no furshots for a while.

AMPS was taken about 30 mins before shot was given (right before we left for the vet), and might have been food/stress influenced since he was hiding under the bed and had to drag him out.

Planning on leaving for my mini roadtrip to my parents house in a few hours, hopefully will get a test or two in before I go. Let's go Roo, give mom some good numbers! :cat:

Good Job starting out Armish! Now, since you are following SLGS, you will hold the dose for a week, perform a 12 hour curve taking BG levels every two hours and then based on what Roo's nadir is, potentially adjust the dose! Don't worry about the 0.5 hr space between testing and shooting :)

Drive safe to your parents and have a good trip :)

Thank you! Now just gotta make sure I pack everything I need. So paranoid because I had a nightmare last night I forgot all his insulin and testing stuff at home :nailbiting::facepalm: He's got a longer packing list than me haha :D
LOL nothing like a nice nightmare to shake the confidence you just built up last night :woot:

I think there are some posts around here about travelling with a diabetic cat.. you can use the search function at the upper right hand area of the page to look for posts with specific content you'd be interested in :)

Understand the packing part. Just to go to vets I have a bag for all the cats.

How long a drive is it?

Something I always do is if I stop for restroom, I grab those white changing table liners. They are great for spit up or to put under the bowls like placemats. Or to lay out your meter equipment if testing on the road.

Did I get everything???? No I forgot one thing, Roo

Have a good trip, how long are you gone for?

Wow Paula, thank you so much for that list! There were a few things on there that I totally forgot about, so definitely appreciate it.

I'm going back to my parents house in Houston, so it's about a 2.5-3 hour drive from where I live in Austin. Definitely glad its a short one for my first trip with him, so don't anticipate having to stop. We're there hanging with my fam until this Sunday, so a few days! Will try to update on here regularly for sure.

+2 update: 278, a yellow hooray!

Three hour trip would be 3-4 stops for me. My parents lived 3 hrs from me. Minimum 3 stops. I think it was more nerves not knowing when you hit stopped traffic and how long you'd be sitting in it. I always stopped at key rest areas to make sure I could get through another hour. Interstate 80 and 287 were notorious for sitting in stopped traffic for hours because of an accident. Exits are far and few between. I-78 has no exits.

Congrats on the successful injection AND the nice numbers :)! I actually also got these additional items for travel or in case of power outage:

1) a FRIO wallet for the insulin...keeps insulin cool & safe WITHOUT refrigeration or ice..activated with cold water & keeps the insulin cool for a LONG time. You can get them on Amazon but the website has some other cool stuff. I researched how to keep insulin cool & humans who've travelled all over Europe, hiked etc. swear by them.

https://www.frioinsulincoolingcase.com/frio-duo-wallet.html

2) I also purchased a MedAngel which is a sensor that stays with the medication & continuously measures the temp & communicates with a mobile app. It alerts you if the temps exceeds the safe range. I did purchase this on Amazon but here is their link to read about it:

https://medangel.co

3) A travel case that fits all the insulin supplies in, including an insulated area for the insulin/FRIO. I purchased this on the Frio site.

Safe travels!!

I have to check that FRIO website out!

Its SO awesome! I sat here & just wandered the web seeing what humans with diabetics do being that they travel or live in areas with tornados or hurricanes etc & not everyone has or can afford a whole home generator, so I wondered what do they do?? I came upon multiple adventurous people talking about FRIO & the MedAngel & purchased both. Peace of mind!

Hi all, just wanted to give an update on our trip! We arrived safely in Houston after a 2.5 hour drive, with no stops. There was some indignant meowing but other than that he seemed okay! Closed him up in my childhood bedroom so he wouldn't be overwhlemed by too much space (tiny 1 bdrm apt -> 5 bdrm house). Took his BG and it was in the yellows, even with stress of travel so I am very pleased. So glad I pushed to start the insulin before the trip, wouldn't like to know how high he would have been without.

THEN PLOT TWIST - I think I accidentally left the door slightly ajar for 10 minutes while I went to chat with my mom and when I came back - no Roo in the bedroom, he had vanished????? Mind you this house has never had pets in it, and is definitely not cat safe'd so there are sooooo many hidey spots. We looked everywhere for like 20 minutes and I had begun to believe that he was a figment of my imagination and I forgot him in Austin, cuz how did he get out with the door shut??? Then I remembered he's obsessed with food so decided to put some out to lure him out, and sure enough - as soon as I opened the can and hit the spoon on the dish I hear a jingle.....he had appeared! Still had no idea where he was hiding in my two storey house but know I can always trust his appetite!

It's been a rollercoaster of a day, but I am so so glad the insulin is able to support his body to some degree. Kind of glad I'm starting dosing during a wild time, cuz now it'll be so much easier on a normal day!

Oh Roo, always giving mama a heart attack o_O:kiss:

Checklist printed...:) so if we go somewhere with Ti-Mousse this summer we'll have everything, PLUS Ti-Mousse!

Update: back in the pinks for tonight I guess :(

I'm pretty sure my shot made it in but now I'm not so sure. Could also be the gabapentin for anxiety wearing off - I forgot to add it to his dinner tonight. Hopefully we can do better tomorrow but I'm probably going to be out all day and unable to test for most of it.
