Morpheus & Sam
Member Since 2019
Since Morpheus was diagnosed, his numbers have remained pretty high (in the 300+ area, with some reaching into the 400s) with the infrequent mid-200 here and there to confuse us. With the addition of his lameness, which coincides with his high glucose readings, we were pretty sure the hyperglycemia was partially caused by that pain. Add to that the fact that he's nursing a painful UTI and we're into the third week of antibiotics and we were almost certain about his high blood sugar's cause. Now erase the word "almost".
I think the antibiotics are finally doing their job. Last night he got to his box by himself, without waiting a long time, or asking for help. And he looked offended when I asked if he needed help to get back to his bed -- right before getting out of the box and walking steadily over to his water bowl to get a drink. This is a very MAJOR accomplishment. It's been hard for him to even turn over for a few days now. I was really, really worried about him. He looked weak and shaky to me. He also looked like he wasn't eating very much.
So I cut down on the amount I was feeding him, since he wasn't eating it, anyway, and now I give him 1/2 or a 3 oz Fancy Feast or 1/4 of a 5.5 oz Friskies. His brother enjoys what's left of the can and I do another glucose test 3 hours later and feed him again. It seemed to be helping his blood sugar a bit, keeping it much lower than it had been -- lower 300s as opposed to 400+. So instead of eating two meals a day, he pretty much snacks a bit throughout the day, and I think it's helped.
Then, yesterday, when he urinated, he wasn't making that loud sound he'd been making.. it was more of a soft meow. Today, nothing. And I can pretty much pinpoint when something kicked in. His last really high reading was 418 mg/dL on 6/11/19 at 9:31 p.m. CST.
We gave the usual 3 units for a high like that. And I got the following numbers:
That's the last reading I did. I'm following the advice on the Vetsulin sticky here and waiting a few hours so I can test again to see if he needs a shot. I'm hopeful about the good readings, though. He just looks so much more relaxed.
