Hi there,

I noticed that after my Roo's dental (infection - 2 extractions and gum treatment) his BG seemed to be going down to the low 300's which I was very pleased about since it had been trending up lately from yellows to pinks.

Last night however, I got a reading of 426 which alarmed me (he's never been above 360 and that was after a bad fight) so I tested again on the other ear and got 384 - still high for him. Similar high reading this morning. Even when he was at the vet his highest reading (stress influenced, pet meter) was 407. Could this be his medication? I noticed that the gabapentin the doctor gave me is marshmallow flavored - she said there was no cause for concern about it being sweeter and his BG levels but it seems odd. Anyone have thoughts? I didn't give it to him this morning and will check BG throughout the day to see if that makes a difference.

These are his meds:
1. Buprenorphine Injection (0.3 mg/ml): Give one syringe (0.28 ml) on the gums twice daily for pain control.
2. Onsior (robenacoxib) 6 mg Tablets: Give 1 tablet by mouth once daily. May dissolve in wet food.
3. Gabapentin (100 mg/ml): Give 0.25 - 0.5 ml by mouth twice daily for pain relief. Marshmallow flavor.
4. Clavamox 62.5 mg Chewable Tablets: Give one chewable tablet by mouth every 12 hours until gone. Give with food.

The doctor wants to wait until his two week re-check to talk about insulin. She said she doesn't want me to test BG (for now) and instead just to urine tests for glucose and ketones, but I'm planning on doing both - I don't like the idea of not checking his BG to see the effects of the infection being gone/medication and trends to think about for insulin in the future.

Sorry this is so long, but any insight helps! :)

Good for you to keep testing the BG, how else are you going to know what's happening. The urine glucose is not nearly as accurate, just tests the urine that has collected in the bladder over a period of time.
I hope Roo's BG lowers and he gets to feeling better as the mouth heals. :cat:

Thank you so much Lou! I am so glad I found this site and am equipped with so much info to fight these battles with the vet. Anything for my bub ❤️

Are you testing for ketones in the urine. I think that would be a good idea if the vet does not want to start insulin yet. To test buy a bottle of Ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy. Collect a urine specimen from you kitty and dip the test strip in it. Test exactly 15 seconds later against the colours on the bottle. Anything above s trace needs vet attention.
Honestly I don’t think some vets think things through sometimes. And good on you testing.
