? Alice 6/3 PM cycle +4: 54, clinical signs normal, hypo risk?... & expired pen question

Wondering if anyone is on right now. PMPS was 131. Shot 4u. Usually when she runs low at PMPS she bounces. She’s had 1 5.5 oz can of friskies 4% pate. Thoughts on feeding? LC, or HC spoonful, or mix? I have been trying to give her one good testing ear a break more often lately, and I am also sick myself tonight. I don’t feel like it is an emergency, but I would appreciate support/feedback. Thanks! :)

ETA fed a Sheba chicken in broth portion. Finished at +4.3

At +4.5 she was down to 51 so I gave a spoonful of 20% FF.

She’s still purring upon touch, grooming, hanging out on the bathroom floor with me.

I can’t get over it, every time I touch her, how she feels so padded and fat again. It makes me glad to see her strong and hissing and cranky even at the other cats. (She only ever liked her brother.)

On another note, at least one of the civvie ginger boys has tapeworms. They are completely separated and Alice had a dose of Revolution a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t seen any worms in her boxes. I’m trying to decide if I should treat anyway just in case, with her surgery coming up on the 12th. She has absolutely no contact with any of the other cats except staring through the baby gate.

Will retest at +5 in a few minutes....

I've had the exact situation.
I shot Bear with a lower BG because usually he goes into a bounce even from blue and surprise it was much later in the cycle before he started his bounce.
You are doing great.
Hopefully that 20% will make a difference.

Above 50 is still safe and I think some would suggest to feed a bit of LC to help her surf along. But let's see where Alice is at +5 :)

It looks like her nadir is usually around +6 to +7, am I correct?

Looks like Alices nadir has been moving a bit. 5-24, 5-25, and 6-01 it has been about 4 to 4.5.
5-28, 5-29, and 5-30 about 6 to 7.
That makes it hard to pin down, huh?

Definitely! I came to a similar observation :) But if Alice has nadired before at +6 and +7, then Cassandra might have to stay up until then to monitor  But I'm just getting ahead of myself. Let's see what Alice's next few tests bring up.

Cassandra has been off the board for a while and nothing added to SS.
I have to go but I'm really glad you are here. :):bighug:

No, no, I’m up! Lol. I decided to give her a little more time since I fed a bit of HC and clinical signs are fine. I was feeding the others, been throwing up tonight so I’m a little slow. +6 comes in 16 min.

So here’s something I am wondering: we changed to a new pen about a month ago, and perhaps for some reason it had lost some degree of efficacy. A couple of days ago I ran out before DCIN could ship new Lantus, so a friend gave me an unused unopened refrigerated pen. But it is expired from 10/2018 I believe. It might be working better though. Maybe she would have earned a dose reduction sooner, if that’s the case. She is much closer to being weight-restored, amongst other improvements.

@Crista & Ming , thanks, but nothing new, and honestly I am glad I was up to catch the low. :) comfy PJ party on the floor binge watching a show together. I cherish my time with her just being in a room together.

And on that note, I also was not sure if the expired pen would be efficacious or not, so now when new Lantus arrives tomorrow I don’t know if I should continue with the expired pen or switch to the new one. It would be a waste of resources if the expired one is going to stay good for a month (approx how long it is taking for us to use up a pen).

Hmm, I don't have an answer for you in terms of expiration and pens. I'd put that in the title for your post tomorrow/tonight for when the experts awaken :D

But yes, it looks like that pen is working!

Looks good! If you can get a +7 and it's steady, I'd go to sleep :)

That’s about what I figured! Wondering what the day will hold though as I will have an appointment right at usual +5, and had planned to help someone with some very important home things.

Alice is taking a serious nap, now that her belly is full. The 1/4 can of friskies at +6 seemed to do her a favor. She’s snoring and it’s so cute.

Thanks for the company! I was worried I’d be caught alone if it took a downturn.

+7 is up to 86 from 63 last hour, only LC friskies 4% was given in that time. So I think she needs more food and we all need naps soon. <3

Have you had fleas in your home recently? Is the cat with tapeworm a new resident?

The tapeworm lifecycle involves a flea. A cat gets a tapeworm by eating an infected flea, not by direct contact with another cat who has a tapeworm. Even though your cats only have contact through a baby gate, any fleas can easily move back and forth.

You can take a stool sample to your vet for examination but that's not always definitive ... the tapeworm segments don't shed constantly and therefore aren't always seen in a stool sample.

I'd ask your vet for advice, but if I have/had fleas in my home and especially if there's confirmed tapeworm in another long-term resident cat, I'd personally treat all of them.

EDITED to add: Revolution kill fleas but does NOT work on tapeworm.

(And of course use flea preventative on your other cats as well if you're not already.)

Thank you, and yes we are aware of all these things as seasonally fleas reoccur to some degree here. She was treated for fleas and so is everyone in the house. My vet was not in when I stopped by yesterday, but we will still consult prior to surgery. Alice does not bury her feces in the box so I have a very good look at it on a regular basis. For a long time I was also tracking fecal score regularly and adding pictures to my digital notes and so on, of her bowel movements.... I see too much poop.

I can almost 100% guarantee it came from one particular cat who is a flea magnet (I haven’t figured this one out yet), pretty sure it was his poop because I am familiar with what his look like in that box. We do not have carpet, they don’t share blankets, etc. She is also in the most isolated room in the house (physically but not socially). That being said, it’s definitely still going to be discussed. The ginger boys were treated with Profender the evening I found the worms.

Oh and to specific questions, no new residents, but once in awhile we get a mouse in the house, that sort of thing, it’s spring, we did not really have a proper freeze, bugs happen. I’ve also got some room treatment I can use and I planned on redoing a room for her since it opened up.

.... I am half asleep, may be babbling. Other CG helps with morning shift so I can catch extra rest, but I still have to consult. Been sick, dehydrated.

Umm AMPS was in a decent yellow so having not seen message here we went ahead and did 4u one more time. Was going to look at dose changes in new post later when officially awake.
