My Kitty (9 yo) diagnosed with diabetes, UTI, severely dehydrated, and something else I can't remember, starts with a K. In vet hospital for 2 days and sent home with insulin and a pill I givehim once a day. He does not seem much better and is hiding under bed. He got up to eat at 630 am then 1230pm and nothing since. I took food to him and he ate little but enough ( I guess) for me to give him insulin. I am so concerned he's dying on me. I have spent a small fortune ($1250) and feel I need to take him back. Hes barely drinking water. He urinated yesterday( in liter box) and this afternoon on rug! I'm distraught.

Was it Ketones? If so, that can be serious. I saw in your welcome thread you’re planning on calling the vet this AM, please do. Your kitty needs, fluids, food and insulin as soon as possible. Can you syringe feed him and get some insulin in him? Not sure where you live, but if ketones are involved, the sooner he receives treatment, the better. Please let us know what your vet says.

If it was ketones you can test for them at home by buying a bottle of Ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy and testing kitty’s urine. But I agree with Sharon, you would be best going back to the vet and getting kitty checked in case he needs more treatment. When you get home again please post as we can help you get him back to health.

Welcome to this board. My cat was also recently diagnosed three weeks ago. It is all a learning curve. I know this is a scary and turbulent time for you and your kitty. I suggest you get a blood monitor blood sugar meter once he is stable because that is the only way you are going to know if the insulin dosage is working or not. Which insulin he was given is important as well as they are all different acting. The insulin info is also on the board. All the info or question you may have can been found here. If you are not testing at home that means trips to the vet which is going to cost you more than purchasing the meter and test strips. A trip to the vet is so stressful for the cat which causes the blood sugar to rise. My cat Mango also had a UTI and from the blood tests found he was diabetic. Peeing outside the litter pan is normal for a cat with a UTI. Drinking more water than normal is a sign of diabetes. I for one can say that I was freaked out to prick my cat's ear for a blood sample as well as give an insulin shot but it does get easier in time. Hang in there as all of us on this board are in the same boat and we are with you on this new journey.

Took him to the vet first thing this morning and he was admitted back in. They have him on an IV and force feeding him. They called this afternoon and said he was doing better and were going to put him on an appetite booster. He's down to under 7 pounds! I hope they'll keep him for a couple of days. I think they sent him home too soon. Thank you for your support. It's been an emotional roller coaster.

Finding this message board is a God send. The vet did not/ has not mentioned monitoring the insulin or the ketone (lol) levels. I have a lot to learn. I'm just praying he makes it. Hes so sick.

I’m glad you got him in and he’s getting the care he needs. Let us know when he gets home and we’ll help you with his after care.

Hi Mary, I'm glad your kitty is getting the best care and is improving.
While he is in the hospital there are a few things you can do to get sorted to be ready for when he gets home.
Make sure you get a bottle of the Ketostix, that I mentioned above as it will be important that you check the urine for them each day after he arrives home.
Can you set up your signature please? It is easy. Just go to the top right of this page and click on your user name. Click on it and choose signature. Then tell us kitty's and your name, date of diagnosis, type of insulin and meter (when you get one), weight, any other illnesses and medications, country you live in, type of food given.....then save.
Also I would look at learning to home test the blood sugars......itis one of the best things you can do to keep your kitty safe and regulated. And it will save lots of money in vet bills. We can help you get started. Sounds scary but it really isn't.. here is the link.
You can buy a human meter at Walmart or pharmacies. A specific pet meter is not necessary and is expensive to run. A human meter is what most of us use.

And here is the link to the spreadsheet. If you have any trouble setting it up, we can help.

Keep asking lots of questions as we are very happy to help you and kitty.
Please keep us posted with his progress:bighug: .......when discharged ask what his ketone level is.
