Hi All

I have found an insured pet sitting service in my town that is professional, insured, and has experience administering insulin to cats. They have provided a quote of $44/day (CAD) for two visits a day 12 hrs apart.

What are your thoughts on this rate?

That sounds a bit too professional. I think we paid $35 last year for five cats, twice a day for a week. They're not wearing company tee shirts are they?
Noah was boarded so no meds.

Thanks! I had a feeling that boarding would be too much money. 35 is pretty close to 44, especially considering the cost uplift of basically everything when you live in a northern community

I paid $50/day to come feed 4 cats, clean the litter boxes and administer medication - subq, pills, inhaler.

She was a vet tech.

A northern community? People will think you live in Tuktoyaktuk.

Welcome to Canada eh.

I want to say that sounds high, but for two separate home visits I might could understand the price. I called around all the boarding places where I live (about 5-6), could only find one place that accepted diabetic cats, they were also the cheapest around in general (animal clinic + boarding) and it was like $13 USD a day plus $10 USD a day for diabetics...so $23 USD a day.

Basically just $10/day less than this quote.... I'm kind of considering taking Mowgli with me when we head to NS this summer since it would save me $700

He just really hates travel

You could post city and state live in and if you are willing and they are willing maybe someone in your area could trade vacation administering duties with you. You go to their home when they are out of town to treat their kitties and they come to your home when you are out of town to treat your kitties.

If any way possible I would see if someone could cat-sit him! I have to go away for two weeks in October, need someone to watch my sugar baby and an ornery dachshund who can't be left alone. I was able to work out a deal with a close friend, I'm dog-sitting her three dogs for a week and she'll take care of my two trouble children in exchange. Saves them about $1000, saves me $500. The price for pet-sitting is outrageous!

Yes I’m really trying hard to think of a friend I wouldn’t mind asking! We did decide to just bring Mowgli home with us as it just makes sense from a cost perspective.

I don't think the price you were quoted is bad at all but then I am in Toronto area where prices are anything but cheap. In my Before Diabetes Days, I had a pet sitter come once daily for 3 cats and the price was $45 per day. If meds of any kind were added on, then the price went up from there. 2 visits per day were $60 per day if memory serves. This was several years ago so I hate to think what the rates are now.

:eek::eek::eek:

I think it’s a fair rate too when I think about it. It just adds up so fast during a long vacation

If that’s what pet sitters are making then I have a new job opportunity out there to look at!

I always just asked my friends. Since the FD I have only had one occasion though where I needed someone to help.

My friend offered to learn how to test and give shots for me when I mentioned to her that I needed to find a sitter who would deal with meds. She pet sat for me on several occasions. We started off training long before I had to leave to make sure both she and kitty were comfortable with the situation. I left copious notes and thankfully could stay in touch while away in case any questions cropped up. Any chance you have a friend who might be willing to help you out?
