Hope I have the right forum this time. I am new to this, and am learning my way around. I apologize for posting on the grief forum by mistake. My heart goes out to all who have lost their dear pets. My question is: how do you do a glucose curb? And is that the same thing as a chart? Do you check glucose every 2 hours over a 24 hour period, and show the results with a graph? Thanks for the insight!

Hi, I just happened to see your name here from your previous post... no worries about posting elsewhere, this is a big place to find your way around! If you look at the very top of the page you will see the header 'Forums' and by clicking on that you'll see the list of different forums - for future reference, pick which one seems most appropriate and post there. To start with, you can post on the welcome forum and introduce yourself - by telling us a little about yourself and your cat, we can point you in the direction of whichever forum you need to start off with.

A blood glucose curve is simply a record of your cat's bg over a 12 hour cycle, starting with the morning pre shot number (taken before giving insulin) and then at two hourly intervals up to and including the evening pre shot number. The aim of this is to see how any given dose of insulin is working in the cat, and by seeing how quickly the insulin takes effect, what the lowest point is and how long the insulin lasts, we can work out whether a dose adjustment is needed. We log the data on a spreadsheet which we link to our signatures (the info about us and our cats in our profile) so advice givers can see at a click what the numbers are looking like and help you decide if a dose increase or decrease is necessary.

Does this make sense? There is a certain amount of jargon here to get used to - not too bad though when you've got the basics - so if you haven't already I'd suggest having a good look round the board and introducing yourself on the welcome forum, as I mentioned above. If you need help setting up a spreadsheet, just ask, there are people who can help with that.

Good luck!

Hi Gallagher,

This part of the forum is for technical support questions, you should post in the Feline Health (Main Forum).

When doing a glucose curve we normally test every 2 hours after giving the insulin until the blood glucose goes higher again but there is no harm in testing until the next insulin shot is due, given that your kitty is ok with it and you can manage that. It will allow you to find the nadir, which is the lowest blood glucose level during that cycle and generally see how your kitty reacts to insulin throughout the day.

Everyone on this forum uses a spreadsheet (or SS for short) to keep track of glucose testing results. It's easy to use and very useful. You can find instructions on how to create your own SS here http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/ .

It's also very useful to create a signature, adding details like what insulin and glucose monitor you are using and also a link to your spreadsheet. It will come very handy having all these details easily visible for other members to see if you ever need to ask for help on the forum. To create a signature, click "signature" under your name on the right top corner.

Hope this makes sense and doesn't seem to overwhelming. You are in the right place, this forum is full of useful information. Good luck to you and your kitty!

No apology necessary! The board can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you'll find your way around in no time! I'll move this thread to Feline Health - (The Main Forum). <----- Click on the bold dark blue font and it will take you over there. Once you're in the Health Forum, look for your thread.

Welcome to the FDMB! Hope to see you posting often!

~ Jill
