Hello!
My 11 years cat named Pufy become a diabetic cat last saturday . He has 4 kg on Lantus 3 UI daily after the BG in the vet office was 525 mg. I switched on wet food 2 days ago after reading on the internet ( vet recommended both wet and dry food for diabetic cats). He is not drinking water in excess like before (40 ml/day now from 140-180) the urine is not sticky anymore. Except the last evening when he vomited and refused eating his appetite is normal.
But I am verry affraid his is not receiving the right dose since home testing was not a succes yet and the vet cannot do the blod test without anesthesia wich obviously is not a daily option. I will try urine test but I will receive the special sand and the test next week. So I was thinking that since he is now on a very low carb diet I should reduce the insuline dose to avoid hypoglicemia . I realy need advice , I feel I am failyng , I am dissapointed and mostly I am affraid not to harm my love.

I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home. Make sure the lancets you are using are thicker. I recommend 26-28 gauge.

Welcome! HasPuffy had any blood glucose tests since the food switch? Is the 3U once a day or twice? Either way that’s a pretty highstarting dose and with the food change a lower dose may be warranted. What problems are you having trying to test him yourself. Maybe we can help with that.

No he was not tested for blood glucose before the food switch because vet said it is impossible to test him at the clinic and testing home was a challenge and still is.He is very aggressive when they try to do something, anything to him and he had to be put on sleep every time. My only chance home testing . Regarding testing myself the problem is that even if I succed obtain some blood it is usualy to little for testing and I cannot hold him still to "milk" more or if the drop is ok I cannot restrain him with one hand and use the glucometer with onether. Obviosly I'll keep trying but until I obtain a result what should I do? He is on 3 U Lantus divided in 2 doses

If you can get a drop of blood, scoop it onto your fingernail and test from there. Be sure his ear is warm before you try and use the larger lancets that Janet suggested. Also start trying to desensitize him to the testing. Take him to the testing spot multiple times a day and rub his ear, give him a treat and let him go. After awhile he may enjoy the attention and you can add the poke for the test. Some people wrap their kitties in a towel for testing, but that never worked for me, mine could wiggle out of any wraps made and then theyd run when they saw the towel! I was probably doing it wrong though and maybe something like that could work for you.heres one video on the technique, but if you google it there are others

Congrats on getting a test! This does get easier. I put M'row beside me on the couch. Push him close to me with my arm. Give cuddles & treats. JanetNJ's video is brilliant.
