I realized I haven’t post to the forum in a while after I found the FB page, so here’s an update on my little sugar bear.
Soleil gets tested twice a week now on Monday and Friday mornings since she’s been off of insulin. Her numbers have been amazing; usually in the mid to high 60’s. I’ve even been able to switch her over to Friskie’s Paté with her brother, so food purchasing is a lot cheaper and easier. I found five flavors low in carbs, so I get 12 cans of each. They each split a can twice a day, and receive a few pieces of freeze dried chicken every few days. To help stretch the wet food throughout the day, I add a little water in case she gets hungry while I’m at work.
I’m concerned about her weight. That I can remember, she wasn’t an overweight cat, but it was noticeable when she lost weight before she was diagnosed. She seems thin in her waist area, but she’s walking and behaving normally. At first I was weighing her with me after I weighed myself, which I quickly learned won’t work because I’m working to lose weight myself. So if I weighed her weekly, and I lose weight myself, it looks like SHE lost weight, too. I haven’t been able to find a low cost scale yet. The sooner I can find one, the better.
This morning while feeding them (she wakes me up when she’s hungry; which typically between 12 and 2:30 am) I found quite a bit of vomit in the garage. I took a closer look and it looks like it could have been caused my hair balls (there were two clumps in the larger vomit pool). I’m assuming it was from her because she’s the only one that has hairball issues; even before the diagnosis. I’m SO glad she made it to the garage because she usually doesn’t make it off the couch in time before it happens. She gets sick every couple of weeks and this time it was the most I’d seen in a while. I should start brushing her more frequently considering it’s summertime now so she’ll be grooming more. Before I knew she had diabetes I hadn’t noticed she stopped grooming, so I’m glad she’s been back to it, but I wish there was more I could do to help her keep her food down.
It’s rare she sleeps with me and Flash anymore at night, but I leave her to have her personal space. She’s no longer being isolated in her own personal room since we now have an eating routine that separates her and her brother so she can eat without him bullying her for her food, and her vomiting has decreased.
She’s been very verbal when she’s hungry, so I make sure to wake up when she makes their breakfast request, and feed them as soon as I get home from work.
Other than that, considering I can’t understand her, she seems to be doing okay since getting her numbers under control. She plays with her toys, naps in her closet, and comes to me when she’s not hungry, but wants personal time for a little extra loving and tummy rubs.
