Hi, Jake's vet has asked me to do the curve testing at home (she wanted him to spend day in hospital doing it but I opted to do it at home instead). I got sent home with info sheets and thought the info I needed about how to do it was there, but it's not and it's early Sunday morning so I can't get it from there til Monday and need to do it today as I'll be at work during the week. I've looked for a link on this site but can only find the mini-curve testing! Help please....almost 7am, haven't fed him yet and haven't tested yet. Thank you.

Just did first test....came in at 6.7 and in 20 minutes he's supposed to get his next shot. Is that too low to give him another shot?

Hi I'm also a newbie, my cat is on Vetsulin and I have done 2 curve tests at home already. First I test him, write down his BG reading, then I feed him, wait 30 minutes after feeding, then give him his insulin. I write down what time the insulin was given. Example , I gave insulin at 9:00 AM then I test every 2 hours, write down the BG reading.
So it will look like this
9:00 AM .Gave insulin
+2 test again so that would be at 11:00 AM write it down
+4 .test again that would be 1:00 PM. write it down
+6. test again would be. 3:00 PM. write it down
+8. test again. would be. 5:00 PM .write it down
+10. test again. would be. 7:00 PM. write it down
+11. test. again. would be. 9:00 PM. write it down
If he's not on Vetsulin I would post what ever insulin he is on
Maybe title it Doing a curve test on ( whatever type of insulin he is on)

Thank u so much! I'm 3 minutes til injection time and not sure if he's too low to inject?

6.7 (world) = 120.6 (USA) -- let the more experienced chime in --- I'd be inclined to say, wait half an hour and retest -- have you fed him at all today? and how long ago was his previous shot ? has he had any food since then at all?

looked through your previous postings, he's on Lantus, correct me if I'm wrong but is he still building up the "depot" that insulin works from, and are his readings still inconsistent? could be why the vet wants a curve ... among other things to determine where the nadir (insulin most effective) is, and when during the cycle it occurs

He is on lantus. Big problem I have is that if I delay this shot, then I won't be able to give him one before I go to work tomorrow morning.....arghhhh. I gave him food right after I tested him, which was about 20 minutes ago. Should have added, vet hasn't had me test him before now....specifically told me not to. Vet is telling me to hold off til it goes up to over 12 but then I won't be able to give it in the morning tomorrow before I leave for work. I am so confused!

That is very low to shoot, but it would primarily depend upon how low he gets between his doses that would determine whether or not to give insulin. Because there is no data here on him, such as type of insulin and size of doses, along with BG readings collected between doses, it's really hard to answer your question. Has he been that low before? Do you generally test at home?

I'd say do another test now -- that previous number would alert me, I dread cat going hypo -- don't shoot yet (she says with her hands held high)

Vet said for me to feed him more now, test again at 8 (20 minutes from now) and if he hasn't gone above 12, to wait til he does go above 12 before giving it. I explained to them that that would mean I couldn't give it tomorrow morning before work. They said I can change it by an hour each dose without a problem. I still think that won't work. They told me if it doesn't come down soon I can skip this morning's shot and give him his night time shot as per normal, which of course would mean I can't do the curve testing today.
