I just bought the advocate pet test meter and i tested twice today and both times its 100 higher than my relion meter . Is this normal??

pet meters read higher then human meters. there is less of a difference at low numbers, and a greater difference at high numbers. what were the numbers you got.

The human meter read 186 and the pet meter was 291
well... that is a pretty big difference at a not so high number. I'm going to guess the actual number is probably closer to 260-270. Why did you go with the pet advocate over the alphatrak?

No code on the Advocate meter. I got mine to replace an AlphaTrack2 because I can get test strips for about 40% less.

For comparison, in case that starts to be too much of a cost... you can always switch to the Relion Premier Voice (which is awesome) and the test strips are only $18/100 or they sell 50 for $9 if you're low on cash.

In the vets office the other day, her pet meter read 123 and the meter I just mentioned read 110, which is a totally normal variance you can even have on the same exact device let alone model.

Just food for thought if those strips start to be too costly.

I'm having a hard time swinging the cost of the cheapest strips ... but I do test a lot! ;)

(edit: Thought this was on a different thread... but it all still applies lol)

There are other things that can raise it... how recently had he eaten?

Is he getting exercise? I keep reading that exercise is the most important thing to help the body reverse insulin resistance.

If all last week he was near 160...focus on that... one day is just one day...it could be a fluke or he found some snack you didn't realize he ate or something like a fight with another pet or people even mention on here that a squirrel? can affect their numbers? lol

Yeah all last week he was between 140-190 never over 200 and me and the vet agreed we will put off insulin for now . And as long as it doesn't go above 250 we will stick with just diet change .
The only thing different today was that I tried that Blood sugar gold stuff for the first time ? I'm wondering if that had an affect some how . And also in between meals he gets so stressed and begs for food like crazy (he is used to having food out whenever) . But his water consumption and peeing is still normal (was increased alot before the diet change )

I don't know how that stuff works but any change is a variable that has to be considered if the numbers change...

If your cat has an allergy or sensitivity to one of the ingredients in that product I could see it raising the numbers a bit...

But it's still just one test..one cycle, one day... I wouldn't worry too much until you see the next couple cycles.

If it were me I'd probably not use the blood sugar gold for a day or so and then if he gets back to where he was and you try it again and it goes up again you'll know it might not be a good idea for him. I had so many variables going on at one point I just had to make it as simple as possible so that I could have a better idea what fluctuations might be being caused by.

My guy is underweight so not giving in when he was begging was very hard for me... if he's eating a good amount at meal times and it still acting very hungry...I'd want to test for ketones... I was never able to so I just kept feeding him as much as he wanted to make sure he had enough food just in case cause dka makes them need more food. Any snacks or dry food in the house has to be well hidden cause they can smell it and it will make them want to beg even if they're not necessarily as hungry as they seem. Someone once told me they can even smell the wet food in the cans in the cabinet! lol I don't know if thats true but I know they can smell the dry stuff very well and it always made my guys beg more. Like having snacks in the house, you crave them more if you can see em lol
