3/29 Benny, OTJ Day 7, AMBG 100

Oh, she is. :) It was she who recommended that we stop the insulin, though I chose to decrease to 1 drop for a few days to make sure his numbers held. She seems happy with Benny's success story.

HAPPY DAY gif_1252-Cartoon-Character-Happy-Numbers-7.jpg GO BENNY!

Good visit with the vet, both boys are doing well, though still not quite a 100% clean bill of health. Shaddie just needs to continue on the antibiotic for another two weeks while his mouth continues to heal, and we need to watch his weight. Since we switched them both to all wet LC, though, his weight should normalize. He's probably about 1/2 lb over where he ideally should be.

Benny still has issues with his ears, but the vet was finally able to dissolve the remaining wax plug in his left ear that she wasn't able to get last time around. So I'll continue to medicate both ears for the next couple of weeks, and then he'll go in for a recheck. He also has one small area of gingivitis, so I got cat-sized toothbrush and poultry flavored toothpaste, and I'll have a go at trying to brush that area daily. His weight is up 8 oz. in the last month, so he's at a healthy 8.5 lbs. Ideally he should be around 9.0 - 9.5, so he can continue to eat hearty for a while before we need to start limiting his food. Finally, he'll be finished with his antibiotics in a couple of days, so we'll just need to work on ears and teeth.

All in all, a good visit.

Sounds great! Just wanted to mention, not sure what toothpaste you got, some have sugar.. one that does not is petsmile and that only needs to be put in proximity along edge of teeth, not even full brushing and the enzymes will do the work. Look for coupon if ordering..

We got toothbrush & toothpaste from the vet - the brush is smaller than the ones I've seen at the pet stores, and much easier to use. The toothpaste is poultry flavored! I haven't checked ingredients, but he won't be ingesting it so I don't think it will be a big concern. She demonstrated how to do it, and I think it's something I'll be able to manage.

I think he will be ingesting some unless you can get him to rinse and spit, lol. Maybe can wipe excess with damp washcloth when done. I bought the most popular brand and then found out it had sugar, that’s when I started looking. Just something to be aware of.

Nice going Benny! Make sure the toothpaste doesn't have sugar in it which could raise his BGs. If it does, then just use plain water and brush.

Also, when you start the cycle with a blue number, grab another test @ +3-4 if you can. You want to see him back in a green number after eating to know that the pancreas is working.

Keep up the good work! And happy day 7. :cat:

Hello I a, looking for a cat toothpaste with no sorbitol or dextrose. Any suggestions. ? Thanks
Petsmile. If you google coupons can find discount on first order or sign up for their email and they send a coupon good on first order. Not cheap, but I was told you don’t need much, open tube will last 2 years and don’t need to brush, just get on the sides of teeth and gums and the enzymes do the work. They also sell applicators, but initial order comes with applicator also, sponge on a stick aka “toothbrush” and can be washed and reused several times.
