Ti-Mousse finally back in BLUES !

He's a big eater and has always been. Two years ago he was 22 pounds, last year he went down to 12 pounds in 6 months when diagnosed and now he's back up to 16.
I'm feeding him at 0 (breakfast), +3 (snack), +7 (lunch) and +9(good snack); when he hears me in the kitchen, he runs for food. I tried smaller portions at +7 and +9 but he stays near his empty bowl staring at me with his big eyes without moving! He gets a mix of FFeast, GO, Weruva, Hounds&Gatos. Organix and Fromm he doesn't like too much anymore!

Thinking that maybe Raw diet would satisfy him more but with so many teeth gone, would he be able to eat it? If so, any suggestions on good ones? Thank you!

I have Gizmo on a raw diet and had Gabby on the same for a while. Gabby didn't have all that many teeth! I either grind the food or buy pre-ground raw pork or lamb for Gizmo. It's really no different than pate style. I use a pre-mix from FoodFurLife that I mix into the ground meat (with water) and then freeze in an ice cube tray and then thaw what I need. Marje is able to get a wider selection of proteins than I am -- it really depends on what's available locally. I also can't give Gizmo poultry products -- I need novel proteins.

I don't know if FoodFurLife is available in Canada. I would check their website. I'm also tagging @Marje and Gracie. She did a great deal of research on raw diets.

I buy skinless, boneless chicken Breasts & thighs, & chicken liver. I cut it into tiny pieces, because one of my kitties has lost her teeth & the other two have only a few.
Lately I've tried Food fur Life (they all vomited) now I'm trying Alnutrin. So far they like it. It's very precise about how much to add to the raw meat.( you can buy pre measured packets that you just add to one pound of Raw meat)
Started out with about a third of the amount they recommend. Kitty's body needs to adjust to something new. You can order a sample of each Brand for a dollar.

https://pets.webmd.com/cats/guide/healthy-weight-for-your-cat#1

"Would you know if your kitty needed to slim down? Fat cats are so common that you might not even realize yours is on the portly side.
But overweight and obese cats now outnumber those at a healthy weight, and vets are seeing more super-obese cats, too.
It’s something to take seriously. Even just a couple of extra pounds can make your pet more likely to get some health problems such as type 2 diabetes and make others, like arthritis, worse.
It can even keep them from grooming themselves properly. Keeping off excess weight should lead to a healthier, happier cat."

“Cats should have that hourglass figure when you’re looking down at them, they shouldn’t have a saggy belly hanging down, and you should be able to feel their ribs,”
Studies have shown that being overweight increases inflammation throughout the body and we are just learning about the large number of health problems that can be associated with chronic inflammation.

I hope the information is helpful :)

Good luck with the Raw diet! (my cats have eaten raw since they could chew, they'll be 17 in June.)

Thank you so much! I was concerned with his teeth but as you say, you can ground the meat. I'm gonna go through their web site! :)

I ordered FoodFurLife and had it shipped to Canada, they were quite fast on mailing. Another premix I tried for a while was TCFeline, made on Saltsprng Island in B.C. Here I can get raw venison, kangaroo,, elk, ostrich, and lots of other proteins.
Probably better to get organic meat from a Natural Food store, but can I also buy regular meat from a grocery store ? Thank you so much!

Yeah!!! Back in blue
Have you checked out Darwinspet.com?

Yes you can. I buy organic; free range; grass fed; pasture raised, etc. raw meat for Nelli (incl. Lamb). I mince this up myself (adding only organic pumpkin purée), unless am buying organic ground chicken or turkey, when available.
Nelli is fed a combo of the above along with a Darwin’s diet (https://www.darwinspet.com/cat-food/) for the completeness it provides. Nelli did not like Food fur Life EZ Complete- I have not tried Alnutrin simply because I kept continuing to throw good money after good into the garbage can!
You’ll find something yummy, healthy and, affordable :bighug:

You can buy meats from a regular grocer and the owners of Food Fur Life do that. I buy organic and grass fed meats, where applicable, at local organic grocers.

It’s really important to rotate foods and feed a minimum of three proteins. I don’t feed the same protein twice in a row and I alternate between bison, venison, elk, lamb, pork, turkey, goat. I have also used rabbit and chicken but my two aren’t as crazy about those and they wouldn’t touch kangaroo, little devils. I buy my meats ground although I sometimes feed goat chunks and pork chunks just for variety.

I also used Alnutrin and it’s an excellent product but I got really tired of dealing with the need to add raw liver and it also was not balanced for kittens. I switched to FFL when they started up which is about the time I got my kitten. I also prefer FFL products because they have added digestive enzymes, omega 3s, egg shell calcium.

A cat with no teeth should be able to eat small chunks or ground. You can add more water to the ground and make it a little soupy.

Just transition slowly. FFL has transition instructions on their website and I had no problem getting my cat’s from canned to raw although my Tobey has been eating raw since he was one; I just bought commercial raw like Primal. I still transitioned him slowly when starting Alnutrin and then FFL.

If raw doesn’t work, don’t give up on a better diet. With FFL, they also have the option to cook the meat a bit and then add the powder and water. They have instructions for that as well.

Good luck and let us know if you need any other info.

One question: Will food spike be less with Raw/cooked diet than with canned food ?

Depends on the %calories from carbs. I’ve seen some commercial raw foods have 6% carbs. I’ve seen some canned foods have 1%. And it also depends on the carb sensitivity of the kitty.

I haven’t done the calcs on % calories from carbs on FFL but it’s not much. If you want, let me know and I’ll run it. All the data is available to do so. The premix with meats is also relatively low in phosphorus for CKD kitties. Although it can vary based on the emit you buy, it’s typically less than 1.00% on a dry matter basis.

I'm glad you mentioned phosphorus, I lost one of my kitties last year from CKD and since then I'm careful with that!
Thank you so much for your time, I appreciate all this valuable info!

Sending you Convo question regarding a SS issue ... :bighug:

Different proteins have different carbs and phosphorus, as well as fats. For example, kangaroo is a bit higher carb. I could get meats at an all natural butcher, a local grocery store or butcher that sells organic/hormone free and some raw pet food stores will sell plain meat. You may have to look in the dog section of the freezer.

Lots of reading and shopping to do :) Thanks again for helping me with this !

What an informative thread! Ming's been eating raw pork made by Primal very consistently these past few months. I tried him with the turkey flavour of Primal but he doens't like it, plus the texture of the turkey flavour is kind of gross...

The only thing I have to add is my vets recommend not eating raw foods after extractions but I think it's been long enough for Ti to start raw. Also not sure how valid that idea is but i'll put it out there for others to chime in about.

Nice to see you!! and glad to know about raw food and extractions; better be safe as Ti-Mousse is back on AB again; there is one front extraction that is still red...:( and WOW for Ming's numbers, full of greens! So glad for your little ti-minou!! What an improvement..
